Does chrome lining actually make your barrel last longer, as in you can shoot it more before your barrel gets completely shot out, or does it just prevent damage to your barrel from rapid fire and environmental stuff?

It does both, but primarily it reduces wear because of surface hardness and inhibits corrosion of the bore.
