Well, I was thinking with going with a CAR 16" from Model 1 Sales, and they offer a free-float tube for an additional $25. My question is: Is it worth it? Does a free-float tube have any disadvantages over the standard handguards? Also, besides better accuracy, does it have any advantages? edited to add: Also, who makes an inexpensive free-float rail system? I'm desperately trying to keep my AR budget below $700, which may be hard since I am gunning for a flattop and a BUIS. |

Free float tubes primarily increase accuracy by isolating the barrel from any unnecessary pressure. They also often decrease the guns weight by replacing the barrel nut in some cases. Some of the aluminum ones get hot after a lot of rapid fire and will be cold on a cold day. Fiberglass has no disadvanges when it comes to heat or cold. I have heard the Hogue tubes are pretty comfy since they have rubber on them...I think... If you want a good rail system it will be a matter of opion. Lots of poeple like different ones, but I dont see a $700 AR when you will likely spend well over $200 on a 4 rail handgueard. Check the equipment exchange and get everyones opinion on the exact system your looking at. Most likely you will be better off to just get the Model 1 tube upgrade for that great price. You will be better off than with the plastic forearms. Personally, my next AR will have a fiberglass tube with no rails. I am gonna drill and tap it and put an aluminum picanty rail on from Walmart to attach a bipod or flashlight to. Its just my opinion, but I dont think its a major advatage to be able to mount 70 different things in 20 different ways on my AR. If i want it on my AR, ill make a place just for it. |
