My dad has a Pre Colt A2 and is wanting to turn it into a M4 type. He has a collapsible stock but the barrel is 20”. Can he get a pre ban 14" barrel somewhere? I saw that Armalite has a pre ban 16 w/ flash suppressor. Is this about all there is? Thanks SB |

Actually, I think if you want a true M4 upper receiver and/or barrel, Colt is your only choice. Most of the other brands make their own versions of the M4 type barrels, but they all fall short in one way or another. You can get M4 barrels in both 16" and 14.5" lengths. If you want a 14.5" barrel, you'll need to have some sort of muzzle device permanently attached to bring the overall barrel out to 16" or go through the hassle of registering it as a Short Barreled Rifle to stay legal. My own M4-gery has a Colt 14.5" barrel with a Vortex flash suprressor pinned on and I'm quite pleased with it. |
I have seen $400 price tags on M4 colt made barrels from SAWSALES,If you want all colt go with that but Bushmaster uses the same 4150 steel as colt and chrome lines, the only short fall I would say with bushie is they parkerize the barrel assembly after its been assembled where as colt does the barrel then adds the extension and front site base so every surface is covered. This aside I have only Bushy barrels on my ARs and have yet to see rust or any problems on their barrels and Im out alot in bad weather with my rifles.I dont think having every surface parkerized,as good as it is is worh $150 more for the same quality materials used.

What about the special order M4 barrels made by DPMS for CMMG? It is my understanding they are 4150 steel, chrome-lined, extended feed ramps and all the other goodies. Is there some feature I am missing? They are listed for $225 www.cmmginc.com/inventory_a/Barrels_tbl.html |
