I/m struggling to decide what optic I want for my Colt 6400; is the Aimpoint with the 2x magnification a good choice? thanks

I PREFER THE STANDARD 1X VERSION. THE 2X TYPE HAS A NOTICEABLY NARROW FIELD OF VIEW.

I don't think I ever heard anyone say they like the 2X Aimpoints. Aimpoint keeps making them but I don't know who's buying them.

If you're considering a magnified optic, look into the Trijicon ACOGs or Compact ACOGs. If you just want a red dot, the Aimpoint M2 or ML2 is a fine choice.

Just my opinion, Aimpoint nonmagnified red dot optics are probably the best 0-200yd optics you can use on a combat rifle, But Don't buy an AImpoint Magnified optic, It looks like you are looking through a fish bowl, When the search function is up check it out.
If I needed 2X magnification I would go with the mini ACOG.

Another question, I've asked here before but forgot the answer-if I bought the EOTech that takes the AA batteries, would I have problems mounting it with a BUIS because of the M4 handguards of the Colt 6400?????
Hell I don't know what I want

It would be tight but it works (Colt M4 with BUIS and EOTech 552).  I'm sure sombody will post a picture proving it can be done.

I've seen it done before with an ARMS #40 BUIS, which maximizes the space between it and the AA EOTech.  Not only do the two have to fit on the receiver, but you need space behind the EOTech to access its controls.  The way the #40 is designed, most of the sight assembly is behind the rail slot it's installed on.  Plus, the front portion of the sight is very low profile, giving you even more space.

If you get an Aimpoint M2/ML2 and mount it with an ARMS #22M68 and cantilever spacer, room on the receiver will not be an issue. As an added bonus, you will get the Aimpoint further forward for quicker target acquisition. Case in point:

There's a reason why this set-up is very popular - it works really, really well. YMMV of course.

I agree with Matt_B 100%.

His rifle looks just like mine!

I'd be curious to know how many ARFCOMers have this kind of carbine. I know there's quite a few but it would be cool to see actual numbers. But that AR has entered it's final stage of development so the pic I posted is not really up-to-date.

Dumb Q for matt and troy.  Why aren't you just mounting the optic to the rail on the hand guard?

I would think the reciever is a more solid place to mount.  Less wandering.

That would certainly be an option now, but my DD handguard is brand new, and the AimPoint was already set up for receiver mounting from when I had standard M4 handguards installed.

I may play with it mounted there, but I plan to get an OTAL laser at some point, and I need enough room for it at the front of the rail.  The AimPoint balances better this way too.  It would be okay further out on a longer-barreled rifle, though.

Speaking for myself, I mounted it on the receiver because:
- The receiver will always be more stable than any RAS, whether it's free floating or not. I read a few threads on that subject here and decided to go the most fool-proof route. Barrel nuts can get loose so why take any chances.
- Mounting with a cantilever spacer gets it far enough out front for me. I can still easily reach the lens caps and the control knob.
- As Troy mentioned, it does help to balance the rifle better.

BTW Troy, our carbines are even more similar now since I replaced the Vortex with the "toothy" Phantom and the RRA stock with a MagPul and the ARMS #40 with an LMT BUIS. Heck, we even both have the RAS front sling mount

I agee also with the receiver mounting. For my eyes the distance is perfect. also, I do not have the FF RAS.
(if only the photo-server was up)
