About a year ago, I went out and bought a new Bushmaster, fully intending to turn it into a SWAT team look-alike. So I bought all the fancy mounts and flip-up sights, and Aimpoints and super tactical carry slings, and so on. But recently, I've seen peoples pictures of their old-school, un-adulterated A1 or A2, and I wish I had all my money back. Anyone else out there gone through this too? |

Don't worry, this is normal. In due time you will find out what truly suits you as compared to what you think looks "sexy". Most of us here have a box of doo-hickeys and doo-dads that we bought for various reasons, used for a short while, and then removed from our guns. Its called the learning process. Learn what it is that you truly like to use, deal with, find useful, etc, and ignore the rest. You will occasionally still see somthing new that you just HAVE to have, and you will probably buy it out of a percieved increase of utility or "cool" factor, and in some cases you will keep the item and find it very useful, and in other cases it will adorn the top of the worthless doo-dad box. I went through the same thing in my early years of AR ownership and finally settled on the few items that I really actually like. I find Aimpoints, Surefires, BUIS's, Gemtechs bi-lock, and freefloat rail tubes to be the things I like to add to rifles, as well as the occasional forgrip, and if I could aford it, I would really get my rocks off on one of them Trijicon Ta01 NSN's with the Dr. Optic sight mounted on top. The rest of the doohickeys are in a box though. Among them are things like the boony packer spare mag holder that bolts on the side of the mag well, various HK style pistol grips, hogue grips, fore grips of all types, bi-pods, sling mounts, cheap scopes, buttstocks, lasers, railmounts, etc, etc, etc. Its a learning curve my good man. And you are no less of a man for having gone through it.... Chris |

I never went in for the "little red wagon" (so named because you'd need a little red wagon to tote all that shit with you) school of gun building. I still have my stock FAL, and my stock Dissipator. I'm in the process of building an ultralight A1 with Cavarms lower as well. I do have one flattop gun that was intended to receive a scout scope. It's still sitting with the flipup sights over 3 years later. Have the scope, have the RAS (or is it RIS?) mounted, but since the RAS is not lined up properly, I never even pursued the scope rings. Now I'm thinking I may put an aimpoint on it, but I'm still not sure. All this Magpul/Vltor stock, super fancy forend, fore grip, 17 kinds of sights and optics and tactical 12 point sling still doesn't make 99% of these guys shoot any better. I have seen Hawkeye shoot, and he would be one of the few "gear queers" that can actually hit what he's aiming at whether with a tricked out "little red wagon" gun OR just the irons.

I learned awhile back in IPSC shooting that simple is good. Doohickeys and thingamabobs are great for some people and actually help them, but all i want/need is reliability first, accuracy second, and then the rest is just frosting. It always did feel good to outshoot the Open class guys with my .40 cal limited gun. Especially since i was doing it at 14 |
Post like this will get you banned from here, MISTER! Follow svi40's advice and go out and buy a plain jane AR and keep your M4 as is. |
| I like to keep my m4 looking like the ones the millitary uses, exept for all the scratches and wear. An ACOG or Aimpoint or the RAS. Now if the AWB does go, Ill get a cheep lower and a cheep preban upper and Ill see if I can shoot it and carry it so much that it to looks all wore out also. |

Motown I feel your pain. Everyone need classic 20''er. Thats why I got a Colt HBAR A3. Got the HBAR for accuracy and when I look at Time or TV about Iraq I see hay thats just like mine and its like the A3 I had when I was in. A good base AR. I also know that $700 does not grow on tree's for me so when people say go get another its hard. I personally saving up for a DCMS lite or if every possible a Bushie Modular. I feel your pain. |
You've obviously never seen me shoot .

I have an M4 with the following... KAC M4 RAS, 6v Surefire, GGG aimpoint mount with an ML2 sitting in it, with a bushy fixed rear sight. I honestly find myself shooting it at the range with the irons more than I do with the aimpoint turned on. I like to pratice with the bare irons more than I do with the red dot on. I use the aimpoint mainly for low light shooting, and for fun. Other than being heavier, its really no different than a regular M4 in terms of what its sighting. I learned how to shoot the AR with irons, and honestly, I find myself going back to irons alot more than with optics. But I'd never take off my aimpoint! I also have a bushy 20" H-bar with a KAC M5 RAS and a vertical foregrip. Honestly, I love foregrips :-) |
Well... not to be a prick... but I think your mistake was to try to turn it into a SWAT look-alike... I have one AR right now... and I only see myself having this one for a very long time... So I picked the best quality products to take avantage of my carbine's design... if you spent the money just for appreace purposes I'd want my money back too... my weapon is light, sleek, accurate, and redundant... The extra's just help the weapon to be more adaptable to any enviornment and faster to kill a target... isn't that what we all want ? ![]() Jared |
