Looking at a new DPMS 308, and wanting opinions of people who own or know somebody who owns the new DPMS 308.  Also how much and how hard is it to locate SR 25 magazines?

Thank you

I have an LR-308 and am very happy with it. Extremely accurate. When sighting in my scope with military surplus ammo at 50yds 4 shot group you could cover with a quarter. I do not know how difficult it is to find the SR25 magazines it just know they are very expensive.
Picture of my LR-308 in DPMS industry forum.
Good Luck

the dpms is a fine rifle... some day maybe i could be looking at a fluted heavy barrel 18" chromemoly lr-308 battle and hunting rifle... i think the dpms weapon is a very practical weapon that many over look...

a lot of people don't like dpms but there products are sound and have released 308's that can easily contend with armalite... these weapons come with chrome bolt/carriers and are accuacte at .5"-.75" at 100m... i bet after 1000 rounds through a dpms just to break it in so the bolt slides easy...

they do have there flaws... EOP isn't my best friend... i wish it would take rasff/daniels defense rails easily... but i think if your going to move up to 308... why not keep it in the same familar platform... buttstocks/grips are interchageable with 556...  then you are narrowed to ar10, dpms lr308, or ... dare i say it ... the bushmaster BAR!  :D... dpms is  a strong contender that gets rave reviews everywhere its shown...

i think a light, accurate 18" 308 autoloader with an accupoint or an ACOG would contend quite well in a fight... 25-700m.  you own the battle field...

my vision is to have a West Coast rifle in 308 cal.  ... be the same weight... and length... as the standard wc m16a4... and currently a rra 20" is 38.25" w/o break ... the same dpms 18" is 37" w/o break... the weights are the exact same... which weapon would you choose?

i just think of the 556/223 round as being a sub machinegun round on steriods... so i built a carbine that is a small close ranger weapon... now i want longer range... so i move up to an appraiate caliber.... and then someday... to ar30 or something :D...

Only reason I havent gotten one is the mags cost too much for me.

the plastic isn't the best... but they're learning... besides you get two free... this summer dpms is coming out with 10rd metal mags... and if the ban drops they will make 20rd's...

so sr-25 mags will be in surplus again!

they're great rifles...but the one I have (the 24" barrel) is HEAVY.  I'd look at one of the 16" barrels...I think they make one now that's a 16" non bull barreled moded.  I'd seriously look at that one.

For the price, hard to beat...1/2 of an AR10, and much more accurate than most FrankenFals.

Mine has shot a couple of 1 hole 5 shot groups...but I can't remember what ammo lol.  I've been starting to work up some handloads, and I'm hovering right at moa at 100 yards with the first batch.  I know I can get this down well below moa with a little work.

I agree that the EOP is kind of a pain, as all my rings and mounts are really too high for it.  I'm gonna have to break down and get a set of low #22s or something.

One thing about the DPMS...I really like the teflon finish...it's kinda got a sheen to it, looks very nice.

I talked to DPMS last week...he confirmed the metal mags...and hinted that if there was enough demand...like calls/letters to DPMS...they might start selling the uppers seperately.  I would get the 16" non bull barrel upper in a heartbeat if that were the case.  I sent an email...hopefully enough other people will (hint hint).

Fenian thanks for the insight...

i think a DPMS 18" chromemoly heavey barrel, w/ deep fluts would be a very light yet effective barrel... burn rate on 308 is 17.5-18.5 so with a brake/FS(sept13) your using all the powder from the bullet...

take that barrel and throw it onto a AR10 upper receiver (DUST COVER,FOWARDASSIST,etc) and then use the ar10 lower(m14 mags)... w/ a a1 buttstock/ WOA trigger... add some type of freefloat rail... (pref KAC URX) and your good to go... accupoint/acog... pIMP

you can get ajustable gasblocks so you can crack up the gas if your 308 becomes more dirty :D (FAL lovers envy)...

what do you thinK?  this gun would be no more heavy than a west coast rifle and would have less OAL... but your packing 308x51POWER!  some may say that the WC 556 rifles can hold more ammo... but for every 3 m855 to 1 of my .308 power-point... it evens out...

agree?

I have a DPMS 308 in 24", and am VERY satisfied with it.  It is by far the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, but Fenian is right...it's HEAVY!  Mine seems to like 168 gr Federal Match SBHP the best, but also works well with S. African surplus. (I'll see if I can email you a few targets I scanned.) So far, over 2K rounds without a ftf/fte except for what I can attribute to the cheezy plastic mags.  No failures of any kind with the SR25 mags.  As for the uppers...I was on the phone with Joe Carlson at DPMS yesterday, and they are taking orders now--emailing and calling really does work!  (8-12 week backlog at this time)   Joe also confirmed metal mags are coming this summer, but SR25 20rd are out there at $90-$125 apiece. (Excalibur Arms usually has a supply) GunsAmerica.com routinely has this rifle selling for about $860, so for me, I figured the DPMS, 2 SR25 mags and I was still at about half the price of an AR10T which allowed me to convince my wife we could afford the Nightforce NXS!  It may not be a "By-God-Armalite", and I haven't put it through a USMC combat torture test, for long range targets and hunting, it has more than satisfied my needs.

My problem with the DPMS 308 is the only thing I see them selling is rifles. Where's the uppers, lowers, barrels, receivers, parts, etc?

Jetlag, I'd be stunned if at some point we didn't see DPMS selling all the stuff separately for the .308 rifles...the guy I talked to a couple of weeks ago hinted as much.

They have a quality product, that competes with Armalite...so why not make it easy on the custtomer to mix/match like they can with AR 15 parts.  I don't know what their business model is, but let's hope they see the potential market for this stuff, and act accordingly.  Of course, I don't have their sales data...it could be they're just waiting to hit a target number to show enough demand.
