Another thread got me thinking, what is the primary advantage to an H-buffer as opposed to a lighter non H-buffer? In short why would some one want/need one? Thanks |

Off the top of my head... The standard full sized buffer weighs 5.2 ounces, the standard CAR sized buffer is 2.9 ounces. The heavier 3.8 ounce 'H' buffer or the 9mm mechanical and Colt tungsten heavy buffer at 5.5 ounces have the benefit of assisting extraction by their added mass delaying the unlocking of the bolt allowing chamber pressures to drop and stabilize preventing the fired cartridge from 'sticking' to the chamber walls. The gas 'spike' common on the shorter barrel is smoothed out, the recoil impulse is lessened and the wear and tear on the parts is lowered. The additional weight of the heavier buffer also gives a more positive round feeding and bolt lockup... I went to the Colt heavy tungsten 5.5 ounce CAR buffers and never looked back... |
