Hello guys, I finally did it. I bought an AR-223 colt Match target. From a friend. He said he had over 12 in it. Thats what I want to ask you guys. Of course it does'nt matter I've already put the bucks out. But! maybe I will feel better if I get some good answers from you guys. So here I go. I got a match target rifle with a 1/7 barrel  he put a collapsible stock on it with a 6x40 leapers scope. He threw in 2 30 rd. mags . Also I got another upper  with flash suppressor and bayonet lugs. This is brand new, no rounds has been fired through it. It does not have any ID on it at all, at least I can't find it. I don't know what twist it is. I have the stock that came with the match target rifle also. So guys tell me did I get ripped off for 1100.00 ?  Am I legal ? This is the first Ar I own. So any and all thre info. I get will be highly appreciated. Theres a 50 year anniversy gun show tomorrow, I'm planning on going what would you guys suggest I might want to pick up or get rid of??? Thanks .......Dogo

I assume that is a certified pre-ban serial number.  If so you got an excellent deal.

As far as the gun show....look around for a while before you start changing anything.

I'd say you got a good deal.  The barrel twist is the 1/7 you posted.  Don't go changing anything yet.  Shoot it a couple times first to find out what you do and don't like.  You could pick up some mags and ammo though.  You can never have enough of that.  Check out the Equipment Exchange here first though.  I find better deals there than at the gun show.

Welcome to the club!

Hey friend, I really appreciate all the info. I'm very new with an AR-15. The barrel that is on the lower reciever now is the 1/7 twist. Now the other one which is new I don't know what it is, other than it has a flash suppressor and bayonet lugs, but no bolt. We shot it to day and I really like the way it performed. It can eat a few bucks real quick . LOL

Firstly, you need to check one of the preban serial number guides to be sure your rifle is preban.  That it says match target, leads me to think its post ban.  Now, if that is the case, it is not OK to have a collapsible stock on the rifle, change it back to the original.  Additionally, the upper with bayo and flashhider is a nono also.  Those things would apply until September presuming the ban is not renewed.  After that all is ok.  Now, even so, the rifle with two uppers, at $1100 is probably still not a bad deal.  The innards from each upper should be able to swap between them without problem.

You can check your serial number here:  http://www.ar15.com/content/legal/serialNumberList.html.  A letter from the manufacturer stating it is preban is ideal.

Hi guys its me again Dogo, I believe it is a pro-ban. The guy said he bought it new in 91 and that he has'nt fired more than three mags in it. the way that thing eats those rds. I can understand why. If it is illegal, what is the penalty ? I have the original stock. I suppose to go to the gun show to-day. I will try to get a manual and a few other things like 223 dies. I have a Dillion press and I need plenty of brass and powder. what type powder would be the best ? Anyway guys y'all have been great with your advice, I mean all of you. I have several hunting rifles and just got through with a 257 weatherby magnum, but this AR is a lot more fun, that is if I don't in up in the big house. I live in the country and can actualy shoot off the front porch, if I want and no one bother me. I have fairly good neighbors. The closest one is about a 1/4 mile from me. Traveling with it would be my problem if it is illegal. anyway guys thanks.....dogo

Ive worked up a really sweet round useing Hogdon H335,  Here it is but use your head and work up to it.
24.9 gr H335
CCI # 450 Magnum primer
55gr Balistic tip (may not work as well in 1/7, idont know)
Winchester once fired brass.
Medium crimp useing Lee Factory crimp die.

The best group Ive shot to date is with this load.  It measures .217.  Im not consistant enough in my shooting to repeat every time, but groups stay at 1" or under, usualy under, with bag/bench/scope.

If it is illegal, make it legal, fast, real fast.  All it takes is some a/hole to pull you over and it would be all over the news, nationaly.  The media would presure the dept. and you could very well be made an example of.  10 years is a long time with Bubba, and he can/will teach you things about yourself you dont want to know. All for 4" of stock, and a bayonett.  We all know that the only thing a bayonett is used for drive bys in the big city.[:D]
Plus, when you got out you would no longer have any rights to vote, oun firearms ect...  Dont mean to scare you, but we have enemies and this is a weapon they use in warfare.

It would be wise to check the SN...if you had said match HBar I wouldn't have blinked but ( and correct me if I am wrong guys...and I very well could be ) isn't the Match Target the post ban variant of the Match H Bar? I should probably answer my own question and check the list, myself....but, hey...I'm lazy today.

Okay...I am un-lazy now.  You really should check that SN.  According to the FAQ on biggerhammer.net MH stands for Match Hbar in the serial number prefix and MT stands for Match Target and there are NO Match Target serial numbers (i.e. MT3334xx ) that are pre ban according to wqhat I have found.  Anybody have any other info?
