are they the same?...could you explain what is better and why. Jack |
| Chrome-moly is a type of steel (it means the steel has chromium and molybdenum in it). Chrome lined means that the steel is plated with chromium. One note, though, only because a steel contains chromium and molybdenum in it, it does not mean that the steel is stainless steel. 4140, for example, has Cr and Mb in it, but it is not a stainless type. In order to be a "true" stainless steel, you need to have at least 13 Wt% chromium. |

From an AR15 perspective, IF your primary shooting will be plinking and SHTF related, a "chrome-lined" chamber and bore barrel will be easier to maintain and clean. It will also last longer (higher round count) before needing replacement. A "chrome-moly" barreled rifle will most likely shoot a bit tighter groups, but will take longer to clean generally and not last as long, (round count wise). Chrome lined bores and chambers are considered a must for most, wanting to utilize their AR15 as a survival rifle. Mike |

Quoted: How can you tell whether it's chrome-lined or not without looking at the stampings on the barrel? I have a Bushmaster M4 with stampings partially machined off. Also a Bushmaster V-Match fluted HBAR with the stampings "fluted" off. All Bushmaster AR-15 barrels are chrome lined except for thier DCM and Stainless barrels. |
