I am trying to decide if I am really saving money by buying used.  I doubt I will be doing anythng fancy (like competitions)-I just want it to have fun with and plink.

How long should the bolt/bolt carriers, barrels (heavy/chrome line, uppers receivers last before needing to be replaced?

The average used equipment I have sees, have about 500 rounds fired.  Kinda makes me thinks things start happening at 500 rounds and people want to replace them with newer???

depending on the user or your usuage, your milege may vary.  Typically with relaxed range sessions with occasional trigger happy moments there is no reason your rifle should not last 10-15,000 rounds for barrel life. --> note this is just a general principle.  Most if well taken care of will shoot for the rest of your lifetime and the next.  All this of course depends on shooting std m193 (55gr) or m855 (62gr) bullets and not a bunch of tracers or ultra velocity varmint 35gr and 40gr rounds which can increase barrel wear from increased velocities respectively.  500 rds is nothing.  If you can get a good deal with maybe some mags take the money you saved and buy ammo or optics.  Most of all and finally ENJOY!!!

Edited- buy a chamber gauge set, a good way to check the chamber tolerances before purchase.
