What Zak said.  You'll notice that your AR is MUCH dirtier when fired with a suppressor.  There is a a great deal more gas being blown back into the action, increasing backpressure and speeding up the whole system.

You can also increase ROF by decreasing the bolt carrier assembly mass and fiddling with the op spring strength.  This is often done in competiton-only IPSC/3Gun-type rifles.  Less reciprocating mass upsets the rifle less and faster bolt operating means you can reacquire the sight picture sooner.
