I am looking for a good all around rifle and arrived at the AR's.  I hear you can hunt whitetail with .223, this sounds like a light caliber for this purpose.  Is the 223 capable humanly dropping a deer.  And does anyone hunt deer with their AR?

I hunt deer w/ my AR15, there are better cartriges for deer but w/ the right soft point bullers, the AR15 is a good deer rifle. Deer is about the largest game that I would hunt w/ an AR15. It is mainly a varmint round. This topic will be sure to bring some replies. Billy

ARnutt, you're in Michigan and yes, you can use the .223/5.56 for deer here... I've used my ARs on many occasions deer hunting with great success.  The topic is a real hot button here on ARFcom so expect some strong 'no' answers...

You may want to do a search as this topic has been posted several times both here and in the Hunting forum in General...

A few threads to get you started...

Yes.  This topic has been beaten to death.  The AR15 with a 16" or 20" barrel can humanely take deer at moderate ranges, assuming you don't take running shots into their guts, or other such slovenly stunts.

You will never regret buying an AR15!!!

Deer? No Problem, just when you take your shot remember your useing a pea shooter and make the shot count. Ive cooked up a sweet handload useing a 70gr Speer soft point scooting at about 3000 fps.  Plenty, but you have to know how to shoot, not just how to be a trigger puller.

It's all about placement of the shot.  I've seen guys make bad shots with 7mags and not recover deer. So, a perfectly placed shot with a .223 will do the trick.

Killed 3 deer with 223 1 head and 2 spine shots little brother killed one with 223 last year one shot to the broiler room doesnt do much damage make you shot count get as close as you can. 22 LR through the brain) will kill a deer just as dead as a center hit with a 20mm AA Gun

Here In Wisconsin deer hunting with a .223 is legal and in the past I have shot oh maybe three deer with my Mini 14 (did not get the chance to do so by sheer bad luck with the AR yet) and they died instantly with a good lung shot and a 55 grain soft point...in fact, the innards of those deer were pretty scrambled up, which emphasizes the extreme lethality of the .223 round! Not ideal for deer, I prefer an 8mm Mauser...but with good shot placement, keeping in mind the .223's habit of being deflected by foliage...it will do!
