I've been trying to decide what scope to put on a 20" Colt flattop, and I think I'm gonna get the Leupold model 3-9x40 matte duplex, Target Knobs LEU54070..SWFA has this for $359.99, and since they're in the town I happen to live in, I won't have to order it.  Is this a decent scope for .223 for no more than 300 yard shooting?  Another question, what kind of scope mounts do I want?  A Colt flat-top is a Weaver mount, right?  How high should the mounts be so the front sight doesn't obscure the scope picture?
Please forgive my ignorance, I'm new to the scope world.

I just attempted to mount a Simmons 44 mag scope on my low pro and it would not mount with med burris rings.  I have ordered the high ones, I am sure they will work.

A Leupold 3-9x40 is an excellent choice for a 223 AR. It is more than enough for the distances you are looking for. It is not a suitable CQB optic, but it looks like you already know that [:)]

I've had my 3-9x40 VariX II since 1991 and it has never let me down. It has been dropped twice and has spent lots of time being bounced around in the trunk of a police cruiser when I loan it out. I paid around $300 for it back then, and the ARMS mount was another $100 or so IIRC.

you need not worry about the front sight... any scope 3x and up and the front sight will dissapear. weaver rings will work as with a gazillion others..armalite has a nice mount for scopes on their site...hope this helps
