Does anyone have any experience with the XM177 kit from Model 1 sales. They tell me this is a preban kit,  But if the brake is welded on to increase the lenngth of the barrel to 16" why can't this be a post ban if I take out the bayonet lug.

Any help will be appreciated.

It is considered a pre-ban because there is still a flash suppressor on it.  The flash suppressor has to be welded on in order to comply with the legal 16 inch minimum barrel length but it is still a suppressor.  I'm not sure on what other options you have if you want a XM177 clone, Bushmaster sells an 11.5 inch barrel with a long AK74 style brake on it, not sure if this works for you.

Good luck.

You could "castrate" the lug without having to remove it by grinding the locking ears and refinishing.
You could also make and weld a small round steel plate into the opening of the flash suppressor, and then drill a hole just large enough to allow the projectile to go through.
It will need refinishing, of course.
The suppressor modified in this way will actually become a flash enhancer, as the burning gases will be forced through the six slots for one hell of a flame show.
Just make sure the plate is at least 1/8" thick and welded all around, otherwise it will be blown out.

Since the original XM177 didn't have a bayonet lug in the first place, there really isn't much good to be done by demilling one for appearance.

Don't know what kind of brake is on the piece under discussion, but an XM177 brake that is actually dimensioned like the original won't tak a bayonet in the first place.  It's too wide/[:D]

Then by all means, shave that sucker off!

I do have a 10" lugged barrel with Bushmaster's imitation moderator, which doeasn't have the granade launcher ring at the base, so it fits.

As long as your bbl. length has to equal 16" why not make it BARREL.  You can build a CAR-15 with a BRAKE on it and have almost the same thing as an XM177 without the hassel.  When the ban sunsets pick up a reverse flash hider and screw it on in place of the brake, that way it'll look like an XM177 but you'll still have the longer bbl. for vel. increse.  Just a thought.

Thanks.  I will keep these sugestions in mind for my next build.

I am wanting to build a post-ban XM177 also.  I seem to recall seeing a mock 5.5" flash suppressor somewhere, but I can't remember where.  It looked exactly like the XM177 flash suppressor, except the "slits" were not cut all the way through.  Would something like this qualify as ATF approved, or would it need the end welded shut with a hole drilled in it to form a "brake"?

My other thought was to buy a 16" barrel and a pre-ban 5.5" suppressor.  You could drill out the threads on the suppressor to the correct diameter of the barrel and slip it over the barrel.  Once on the barrel, align the end of the suppressor and the end of the muzzle flush and weld it in place, essentially creating a "barrel shroud" for lack of a better word. This would recreate the profile of the XM177.  Would this still qualify with the ATF as a "flash suppressor" since no flash would actually be suppressed?

Anyone have any thoughts/experience on this???

I think this part already does that-- fits over a 16" barrel and has the ~5" external length of a CAR-15 suppressor.

Bad idea!!!  You just made a single wipe sound suppressor (if the FS slots are blocked), or at the very least, a non-approved BATF brake (if the slots are left open).

If you’re going to sleeve it, permanently sleeve it from the back of the device, all the way to the front (welded).  This turns the FS into a permanently attached barrel extension.

Also, I believe your muzzle brake (or whatever) can’t legally have the same diameter as a USGI flash suppressor.  This is to prevent you from fitting a grenade launcher!!

Model 1 does make a post-ban XM-177 kit. I bought mine at the Dayton gun show last June. The slots are not cut all the way through. It does not have a bayonet lug and the stock is not collapsible. From page 8 of their 2003 catalog: Pre-ban comes with a CAR collapsible stock, post-ban comes with a non-collapsible CAR stock. That is the only mention of their post-ban XM-177 that I have seen. In fact, I was going to buy a post-ban M-4 until I stumbled onto this kit. I saved $50.00 and it is now my favorite carbine.

I'm so pissed about this.  I have all these extra rifle grenades just laying around my house but all my rifles have postban muzzle brakes on them.  I can't wait until September so I can get back to shooting rifle grenades at stuff. [:D]
