The only companies that have ever had a US Military contract
for the M-16 are: General Motors (Hydramatic Division) FN Colt Harrington & Richardson Colt has the contract for the M-4 and M-16A2 FN has the contract for the M-16A2 as well as the M-240, M-249SAW. Bushmaster also had a one-time contract for about 500 rifles. IIRC. They currently do not have a US Military contract. Colt holds the patent on the M-4 design. FN (according to them) only makes what Colt lets them. |

Bushmaster made some M4s for the gov, and Colt sued them for copyright infringement.

IIRC Bushmaster made a version of the XM177E2,
as the M-4 was not developed at that time. Their contract was in the mid to late 1980s. The M-4 did not come about till 1994. Bushmaster did and does make rifles for the US Gov. However not the US Military. They are in use by the DOD, DOE, and other various Governmential agencies. But not the US Military. |

Thanks for the answers.
I had heard of Bushmaster selling some in the mid 80's, but was not sure it wasn't just gunshow talk. And FN will not sell anything to civilians from what I understand. Colt stopped selling post bans to civillians under the previous admisistration IIRC. |

Bushmaster made a copy of the Colt 727(M16A2) carbine back in 1988/89. Approximatly 500 were made and issued to NSW and SF units. The guns were not all Bushmaster when issued. The stocks, handguards, trigger guards and pistol grips were replaced with Colt parts.
The folowing companies also had US DOD contracts: Colt: M16,M16A1,M16A2,M16A3,M16A4, XM177's, Carbines and M4's General Motors/Hydramatic Division: M16A1 Harrington & Richardson: M16A1's FN: M16A2 and M16A4's |
