I'm looking at a new AR-15 upper (20in light barrel) and I want a good compensator.  I have found 3 that interest me; the ak-74 style from bushmaster, the miny-y comp, and the wilson combat tactical break.  I don't believe lengh will be a problem or blast or noise since I will be outside, just want a fast followup shot. Any thoughts or experiences with these devices? Thanks.

First off,

A good comp is LOUD.  Its not really bad when you are shooting but your buddy standing behind you or off to the side will probably complain.

Lots of people get rid of their comps for this reason coupled with the fact that recoil from a 223 really isnt bad at all.  Simply the annoyance from the blast, etc. out weighs the gain in recoil reduction for them.

I like comps. I shoot alot of 3-gun type stuff that requires fast, accurate and multiple hits.  Comps make this easier and faster.  If I were going to shoot varmits from a rest or prone, I would not use one -- the blast and extra noise would out weigh the gain that I would get.  However, if youre looking for fast follow-ups the comp route is the weigh to go.

I have shoot 2 of the comps you mentioned.  The ak-74 style and the mini y-comp.  Both are loud and both are effective.  I personally find the ak74 brake on an AR "just wrong" from an aesthetic (sp?) point of view.  Its also longer.  The mini -y works great and does the job well both in semi and FA.  The best comp I have found for the reduction of muzzle rise and recoil is the ZM weapons y -comp.  Down side is they are about $100 (at least last one I bought from them was) and they are longer (which bothers some people).  With this comp, I can shoot 3-5 round bursts in FA standing at 75 yards and hit a steel silouhette with boring regularity.

Hope this helps.

4gma,  Well said!! That is the best I have ever seen this question answered. I have two rifles with the mini-Y and there is practically NO recoil or muzzle flip.  If you think the ZM weapons y -comp is better, I've got to try one. [^]

5subslr5, Get a comp, wear double hearing protection and have a ball.

I have and like the wilson tactcal. As far as loud goes, You're shooting a GUN ! I like the Wilson because it's short and looks very similar to the A-2 birdcage. IMO skip the AK style brake.

This might sound wierd but,  Is it possible to put a boss compensator on a post ban?  Its just a comp but I am unsure if its legal?

Kurt will permanently mount this to you AR barrel.http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/catalog/item/29585/11830.htm

SLB-
Check out some of the brakes/comps that direct the gasses forward. This eliminates the extra noise associated with most systems.http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/catalog/item/29585/23436.htm. Notice how the gas exit holes surround the projectile exit. The 'fake' FH machining around the body are just cosmetics to immitate a real flash hider.

I have one braked barrel and it's led me to purchase nothing but plain barrels since. In fact, the last time I used it was to wrap a piece of sandpaper around it to finish a wood project I'd taken on.

If you're looking for something that looks as close to a birdcage flashider as possible but is still postban legal try this:
EGW E2 Compensator

Im sorry if i missed something,  but the barrel already directs the gasses forward.  The gasses have to be directed backward to offset the recoil...

My new rifle still has a naked barrel,  cannot figure out what i want....

The don't have to be directed backwards, they just need to be slowed. A term used in designing comps is 'plate'. In designes that direct gasses forward, the 'plate' is all the area surrounding the bullet's exit point. The plate area is what halts the rapidly escaping gasses. The outer exits are where this gas is bled off, but in a forward direction instead of a side.

Think about it like this. What direction would the gasses escape if you welded a cylinder around a typical AK brake that's larger than the brake itself? They would escape out the front, yet the brake would still work the same. Forward exit brakes just take this concept and put it into a much smaller, efficient package.

Another trick I forgot to mention is setting the orientation of your comp at the 1 o'clock position (looking at the sights as if youre shooting).  I think (?) this helps keep the muzzle rise more in a straight line vertically rather than vertically and slightly to the right.  I just made this minor change about 3 weeks ago and havent given it a full run down yet, however it did seem to help on FA.  I'm not sure its going to make much difference for SA though.

The downside is that every idiot that looks at your rifle will ask some dumbshit question about why you couldnt mount your comp on straight.  Gets old.

Thanks for responding! The info you all gave me was very helpfull.  Sine I'll be wearing plugs I think im going to go for a Y-comp.  But if I like the comp I will have to get one that directs gas forward for a hunting upper.  Once again thanks.
