Well, I took the plunge today and bought a bushie with the 20 inch heavy barrel.  I haven't fired a weapon like this since the Marines about 30 years ago, so I am looking forward to it.  I am still a little confused about ammo.  Can I or can't I safely fire 5.56 NATO ammo in this rifle?

It's safe.

Any mil.-spec. AR will safely fire 5.56 or .223.
You need to be careful out there as some AR's are chambered for .223, a 5.56 has a slightly different case length and could cause exessive pressure.
Your Bushmaster will have no trouble with 5.56.

If your new BUSHMASTER acts up you're in the right place for advice.

I have that same rifle - you'll love it!

Welcome to the best gun club bro.

Technically you're not a newb if you were in the Marines although you may be a bit rusty.  You made a perfect choice by buying a Bushmaster 20" Hbar for your first AR.  However, if you're like me, you will soon want a rifle with an M4A3 upper.
