If you guys don't know about the handguard removal tool, you should.  This is by far one of the best maintenance accessories I have bought for my AR's.  It removes the handguards with ease and takes the beating off your hands.

How did hundreds of thousands of GIs clean their M16's in Vietnam without this thing ?  How the hell did I get thru 25 years of cleaning Army M-16s without this piece of crap ?

Use your hands and a flat-tip screwdriver if you really need the help.

Marine, delta is having a bad day or something. I like the tool.

I bought one of these because I have a Bushy M4 that is next to impossible to get the grips off of.  I would like to tell you that it solved the problem, but it didn't.  I bent the damned thing pretty bad on the first use.  It works great on two other AR's, after I unbent it.  Any thoughts on why a delta ring would be so tight?  It moves freely enough, but it will just barely move far enough to release the grip halves.  Would I ruin anything if I shaved some material off of the rear of the grips?

Do you guys in the Marines and/or Army know of any "tricks of the trade" for quick grip removal?  I have often wondered how many times the grips are actually removed for routine cleaning.  Sorry for wandering a bit off topic.

What do golfers, gun owners and fisherman have in common? They all love gadgets.
I could see it coming in handy if you are disabled or are making your living taking the handguards off of AR15's/M16's. Otherwise, do you really need such an item? How often do you remove the handguards? "Takes the beating off your hands"!? Come on Nancy, get some strength in those hands.

I have a Bushy M4 also and have the same problem with mine. I don't own one of these tools yet, but have my doubts as to whether or not it would work on mine.

This tool works great, but I agree, how often do you take off your handguards.  If you're like me, I love to change out the handguards on my AR's.  To me, it is worth it, however some of you may think otherwise.  It does work I must say, and it isn't that expensive.  I thought I'd bring it up since I haven't seen anyone else talk about it.  [:D]

I don't have one, but a buddy of mine made one and it is terrific. I will buy one. I also like to play around with my ARs. Try green furniture, no I don't like that go back to black, how about the M4 handguards, try the Surefire 500 series light on that one............ I personally don't like to struggle with stuff if there is a tool to make things easier. It that makes me a pussy, Ok, tell someone that cares.
I can tell you why I didn't need one of these in the Army. Every weapon I was ever issued was just this side of worn out and the handguards all but fell of them.

Both of my AR's are a pain in the ass when it comes to removing the handguards.
No, I don't remove them everyday, but when I do, it would be nice to have a tool to make the job easier.
If I'm not mistaken, the last time our unit fired we were told to use the "buddy system" to get the damn things off. The Army field manual I have suggests the buddy system is the way to go, too.

It is not lack of strength, although carbine handgaurds are much more difficult to remove than the rifle length ones. It is just so damn awkward to hold the rifle steady, pull down the ring and snap out the handgaurds all at once. I bought the device for $15 at a gun show and I wouldn't sell it for twice that.

There is a really good write up with dimensions and pics to build one of these tools on The Maryland AR15 Shooters Site.

It's the last project listed on the page. Some of the other projects on this page are really good also.
