| Just traded for a used flatop upper and am trying to ID the barrel. It's 16" and has a 2" OD tube that screws onto the barrel base. The end of the tube is flush with the end of the barrel. I've looked all over and can not find any markings what so ever and have searched numerous web sites and havent seen anyone offering a barrel/tube like this. There doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it, and it shoots fine, would just like to know what my options may be in the future if I wanted to change over to a more conventional forearm assy. Any ideas? Thanks in advance |

Troy, Yes, almost exactly like that. The only difference is my free floating tube is fluted along the forward half and doesnt have any vent holes on the forward face. Do you know if the thread size is standard on all/most free floating tubes? I've seen CAR length tubes available, though they dont specify the length, do you know if they would mount using the same tube base and cover the barrel out to the gas block? They only draw back I can see on this, is there is not way of indexing the tube location and therefore no way of mounting a bipod..any ideas? thanks Jeff |

Sleepy717, Just checked with the DPMS sight, it looks close but no cigar. My tube is 16" long (is that the standard length?) and has fluting starting 8" from the upper and ending about 1" from the end. If I wanted to switch over to a standard CAR handguard setup, I'm assuming I would need everything except the barrel and gas tube, is that correct? Havent been on DPMS's sight until you brought it up, will have to browse through there. Thanks Jeff |

Bushmaster made some of these uppers for Kieslers (a major distributer), which they called the Signature X-1A upper. All of these came out at the same time, about 18 months ago or so. And, no, these aren't standard length; the 16" tube is a custom size, and aren't normally available. I don't remember if the Bushmaster ones had fluted tubes or not, though. -Troy |
