| How is it done? I need to install a CAR length gas tube and move the front site back so I can add an RASII. How difficult is it? Do I need any special tools? Just by tearing down my AR, it looks like if you loosen the front sight and slide it forward the gas tube will come with it (with the handguards off of course). Is there anything I need to do to "realign" the front site when I'm done? |
| The gas tube is held by a roll pin in the front sight.Punch out the pin and pull the tube back. You don't need to remove the front sight to remove/install the gas tube. Since you are adding the RAS II, you could probably remove the front sight with the tube in it. |

I am keeping the front sight. I want to add an ARMS #40 behind an aimpoint. How do I move the front sight housing? It sounds easy enough to swap out the current gas tube for a shorter one, but moving the front sight post looks a little more difficult. What are the steps for that? |

What are the steps for that? You *don't* move it. Moving it to a new location would require drilling a new gas hole and new taper pin slots at the new location, plugging/removing the gas hole at the old location, and probaby time on a lathe to get the barrel to the right diameter at the new location. If you really want that you could send it somebody like Kurt but you'd be better off just replacing the barrel. |

The gas port is located under the front sight tower. Moving the front sight will require that you weld the gas port closed, and re-drill a gas port at the new location. The new gas port will also need to be sized correctly to compensate for the changes that will accure in the gas pressure system. The barrel will also require drilling some new indexing slots to secure the front sight in place( and very critical care taken to retain verticle for accuracy). The barrel behind the front sight/ front hand guard cap is larger diameter than the under the sight tower. If you are shortening the gas system, this area of the barrel will need to be milled down to size. |

Quoted: So removing the front site is not a good idea. Since I have mid length handguards, is the RASII not really an option? I don't want the gas tube showing for an inch or so. Removing it is no problem at all. But the rifle may not function reliably if you don't reattach it before going to the range. [:D] There is a mid-length FIRSH available if you really want a free-floating tube with access. rails. |
