I am still looking to buy an AR here in a few days.  This sight has provided a wealth of information so far.  I am still not sure about the advantages of a pre-ban over post ban and would like some input.

I like the idea of having a collasible stock.  I also like the idea of having the threaded flash suppressor.

On the other hand, I'm not having much luck finding a pre-ban flat-top (which is also a feature I want).  Need suggestions!

Since the lower receiver is the serial-numbered firearm, you can easily buy a new upper half (~ $400) with a flat-top.  Or, with under $50 in tools, you could switch out just the upper receiver yourself and replace it with an A3 flattop (~ $100).

Since you would still have the same pre-ban lower, neither of these options affects the pre/post ban status of the rifle

I have a preban CAR and a post ban CAR. Other than collapsing the stock for storage there is no advantage of the pre ban over the post ban.  The pre ban has a flash hider and the post ban has a Cav Arms compensator. Both shoot, look and handle about the same.

Both uppers used to be preban but I cut the bayo lug off of one and changed the flash hider to a CAV Comp. The remaining preban had a flattop receiver which I then swapped for an A2 receiver. It just seemed to be a nuisance to have to mount scopes, detachable handles and/or sights on a carbine length rifle when all one really needs is the original A1 or A2 upper.

I guess if I have to do it again, I don't think I would have spent the extra money and effort to buy a preban lower just to have a collapsable stock.
