I am getting ready to zero in my rifle for the first time. Two questions that are not typically covered in sight zeroing instructions:

What type of target should I use?

What should I use as a shooting rest? Any old thing?

While there are high tech solutions to the rest, any old thing will do.
I have used bipods and but bags to sand bags etc. Just get something that is good and stable, and repeatable for you. No need to part with a lot of coin. Fill some old socks with corn cob etc..

As for targets, there are mill sighting in targets but again, here all you really need is something with a 1” grid on it. Size matters if your rig is way off from the start, getting the first shots on the paper is sometimes trying.. but just move the target up closer first..

I agree with deathfinger.  I like sandbags personally.  It really helps if you have a small sandbag or sock to put under the buttstock.  You can really get solid that way.

One little tip.  Don't know how much shooting exp you have, so forgive me if I'm insulting  you ;-)   A lot of new shooters that I have seen tend to pull the handguards downward into their rest rel tight to steady the rifle as much as posssible.

Unless you have a free-floated handguard, this act will screw up your groupings.  Any pressure on the handguards is transfered to the barrel.  If you pull your rifle down into the rest, this will push the barrel upward.  I reccomend not using hardly any pressure, and just kind of let the rifle lay on whatever you are resting it on.  If it's just an AR that you are shooting, there is hardly no kick anyway.

You may know all this, but I just wanted to bring that up.  I've seen so many friends that I know and other people at the gun range putting the death grip on the handguards and wonder why their groups were going all over the place.

I shot with sandbags for a few years.  However I moved up to a Sinclair rest and Protektor rabbit ear bag last year and love it.  I found that with the common bag system my body was reacting too much to the rest.  With a good bench rest it can be easily tailored to your body.
