Hey All,

Couple of newbie-type questions:

1) Do colt prebans marked CAL .223 (or similar) accept 5.56 ammo (like on an Colt 6601)? I mean they're not SAAMI chambers are they?

2) Is a Gov't profile barrel lighter than an HBAR?

3) I read somewhere here but can't find it now that there is a large hole converter pin that is better than most because it locks in place somehow.  Was this the one from CDNN or does anyone know what I'm talking about?

4) What other preban rifles are of good quality and considered nice to have (aside from Colt and Bushmaster)?

5) How important are mil-spec fire control pins?

Thanks for any and all assistance!

1) Colt uses the same chambering reamers on the commercial pieces tha they use on military orders, so yes, Colt barrels are 5.56 chambered, despite what the reciever says.

2)A2 Govt barrels are lighter than HBARs, the difference is mainly on the back section, under the handguards, A1 barrels, of course, are much lighter than either the A2 or HBARs.

3)The converter pin that CDNN sells is better than most, because when you open and close the action, the pin rotates each way, and thus stays in place. The other kind, with the small head, rotates when you open the action, but doesn't rotate back, so you have to drag out your screwdriver to reposition it. The CDNN piece is the only way to go [:D]

4)I'll letsomeone else handle this. My prebans are all Colt, and I don't know a whole lot about the others.

5)Not sure what you mean here.  Re fire control inner parts, having been ripped off on sleazy aftermarket stuff in the past, I'd rather buy used milsurp, modify when needed, than buy any more commercial pieces. Examples: using an M16 bolt carrier with the shoulder that hits the auto sear cut back so it wouldn't work full auto any more, cutting the tail off the disconnector and the fullauto shoulder off the hammer spur.  There are, of course, good quality aftermarket parts out there, but when I'm standing at some parts guy's table at a show, I want to see the Colt "C" around a digit on the piece, so I know it's good [:D]

Whew Shamayim,

Thanks for all of the descriptive answers.  You really covered a lot of what I was trying to discover there.  Really appreciate it.

With regard to my last question, I guess I was more interested in how important/not important is is to have the small fire control pins rather than the large fire control pins that Colt offers in many of it's AR's.

Thanks again for all the info!

Well, I did have a big pin AR for a short period of time.  It was a 7.62x39, one of the first.  Apart from the minor inconvenience of having to keep two sets of spare pins around, didn't really bother me one way or the other.  I even, for the hell of it, took one of my non hook hammers and reamed it for the big pin. Worked just fine.  Only reason I got rid of the gun was I couldn't find any hi cap mags that worked reliably.  Just my luck. If i'd kept it past the ban I'd have made some serious money on it. As it was, lost about $50 on the deal, 'cause I sold it about a year and a half before the ban---but who the heck knew there was going to be a ban[;D]
