Negative! we as law abiding people can only have 2 "evil" assault weapon features on our "postban"weapons.Your mini 14 can take detactable high cap mags,So right there is 1!adding a folder not only adds 1 for the folding buttstock but also adds 1 for the pistol grip that come with it so 1+1+1=3 3=bad 2=good kinda stoopid aint it?.......UNDERDOG

Damit that really sucks. Now if I where to use factory 10-round  mags while folder on is it then legal? As long as I dont use High Cap?

Nope, your rifle has a detachable magazine, which is one of the features of the AWB. They are afraid that you as an evil twisted gun owner, might succumb to the violent tendancies that the mini-14 has, and L&L some 30's or 90's. There is no reason that you need to have a folding stock AND a detachable magazine, unless you were going to shoot up a bus full of crippled kids, or a convent full of nuns.

I was forced to store my factory folder Mini-14 with DTA Mil-Brake out of state when I relocated to Camelot here. Not the greatest rifle I own but it was fun to play with while watching reruns of "The A Team"

I love my Mini-14. Its is one of the best rifles I have evershot.I can hit a shotgun hull from 70 yards using the iron sights. I dont know all these terms and if thats good or norm or who cares just its never has jammed and always fires when I pull the trigger and I can hit what I can see.

No intent to flame here, but this is my understanding:

The detachable magazine requirement is the "trigger" that sets off the bad qualities aspect of the "AW" definition.  You can not have more than one prohibited feature.  Underdog is right when he says that a folding stock on a Mini-14 has two prohibited features:  folding stock and pistol grip.  He is not correct when he includes the detachable mag quality.

However, there have been arguments concerning item number four in the qualities list.  It reads:  '(iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor.'

The barrels of stock Mini-14s are threaded toward the end of the barrel from the factory.  I have never discovered why (nor have I cared).  It has been put to me that these threads satisfiy this definitional requirement, and, thus, a Mini-14 with folder and pistol grip actually has three "bad" features.

The good news is that, as the threaded barrel definition already applies, the Mini-14 may also accomodate a flash suppressor (so long as you do not have any other "bad" features).

I had a SS factory folder NIB for about 8 years and sold it for $1200 at a gunshow last year with just 2 SS 30 mags, not Ruger. You could have quite an AR for that price! They are heavy for their size, too IMHO. Still have a regular blued Ranch with Butler Creek folder that I shoot sometimes.

"The barrels of stock Mini-14s are threaded toward the end of the barrel from the factory."

I have never seen threads on the end the factory barrel of a Mini-14 or Mini-14 Ranch Rifle.  And I own three currently (and others in the past).

I've just been looking at one set of threads (about 4" from the muzzle) and I believe that there is a second set beneath the front sight assembly.  I'll get back to you on this.  If you want to do this by email, let me know.

I've owned 3 mini's and none were threaded and 2 are here with me that have no threads and front sights are pinned.

Only the GB models and the full auto AC556 models have threaded barrels from the factory.  None of the Mini 14 / 30 models have threaded barrels.  Here is what it should look like if it is a factory job.

OK, after posting above I realized I put the non factory stock in the picture.  Here is the 100% factory picture.

I will be the first to admit that I am wrong, but my stock Mini-14 (stainless) does have the threads.  Is there an "Industry" type who would like to weigh in on this?

Yours might be a GB model.  I think the GB was a maketing name, not a model designator.  I could be wrong.  I am far from an expert.  If your Mini doesn't have the front sight with bayonet lug it is probably a custom job.  Are your threads 9/16" or 1/2"  Mine are 9/16".  If yours are 1/2" that would be another confirmation of a custom job.  This is not a bad thing, just not a factory job.  Enjoy the Mini.

Well, I have been told that I have a strange Mini-14.  I bought it new OTC at a gun store in Wyoming.  It does not have any of the usual GB or 556 characteristics (ie, no bayonet lug, the flash suppressor is aftermarket).

It does produce, consistently, 1 inch groups at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal. 1 1/4 inch groups if you include designated flyers.  I have been told that this should not occur, that 3-4 inch groups are expected.

Did I get an oddball rifle?

Ok my Mini-14 isnt a threaded barrel model. Its a 96 serial Ranch rifle. My question I guess was answered no I cant put a folding stock on it because breaks the laws. Now can I own a folding stock as long as it is not on my rifle? I had found a factory folding stock for $150 and it was lovely.

I would buy it.  $150 is a killer price for a factory folder.  If you don't want it I'll buy it.  I don't think the ATF is gong to knock on your door to see if you have a folder and a post ban gun in the same house.  Constructive posetion is a factor with machinegun parts, but I don't think AW parts is an issue.  If you are selling crack and making bombs they may try to tack it on to make sure you a spend a long time in the big house.  If the ban goes away you will be real glad you did it.
