I know this is not an "AR specific" question but i figure that with this many shooters, some of them have to be hunters. I was just curious to hear some ideas on how much land is enough to hunt on.  Eventually I'd like to move out west or somewhere and buy some land and I am wondering what is a good amount to aim for.  For say, deer hunting and also to have maybe a one hundred - two hundred yard firing range?  100 acres??? 500???  I don't wanna worry about crops or cattle or anything like that.  Just thought I'd see what everyone had to say.  Thanks

I think that is like asking how much money is enough, or how many ARs are enough, or how much ammo is enough.  You get the picture.  It seems like it is more a function of the price of the acreage and how much you have to spend and what you want to hunt.

The amount of land that you need for deer hunting depends on what kind of deer you want to hunt.  It seems like whitetail like to stay in a fairly small area but I've heard that mule deer like to range over a lot of country.

As far as the distances that you could put a range on, that would somewhat depend on the configuration of the land that you buy.  Obviously you could get longer range out of a rectangular piece than you could equal acreage of a square piece.

I think that it was Will Rogers that said "Buy land.  They ain't making any more."

I live in Kentucky, and own 300 acres that I hunt and shoot on. If you said you want to buy land out west, you should buy as much as you can afford. Land out there is for the most part inexpensive compared to land in the east(at least what Ive looked at is). I would say that you would never need much more than 450-500 acres for hunting purposes. I know someone here in Kentucky who owns 3,500 acres. He tells me all the time that he never uses more than 250 acres, but Im sure that you would need more land out west than in the east.

Thanks for the info so far.  Maybe I didn't pose my question properly, but I guess what I was after was like minimum acreage.  I don't wanna end up with too little.  As for moving west, I've just heard that theres more to be had out there and that its significantly cheaper.  I live in east TN and there's just not any land around here.  Must find some....  Thanks again

We have 1075 acres of land in Georgia.  We have never seen more than about 200 acres of it, and that's with alot of walking.

To be honest, the most you'll really need is about 100-200 acres of land.  You can build a nice rifle range, and have plenty of land to hunt.

I moved to the Black hills they named after the ammo with the idea of having my own shooting range & place to hunt. Now that that dreams been blown outa the water I live in Texas, & really have a hard time finding a place that is close enough to get to, to go and blow my ammo.
I moved from Wi to the Black Hills, thinking land had to be cheaper out on that endless looking prarie. Turns out it was arpound 5G's to 12G's per acher on the praire, & a least 20g's per acher anywhere in the hills that was worth having. It turned out to be a real eye opener, & a [nuts] to boot!
I dont know how far west you were thinking, but dont plan on S.D. if your not real wealthy.

My wife is a Realtor here in Colorado.  I can have her look up some acerage prices for you and post them to you if you want.  Prarie will be the least expensive with mountain land being shockingly expensive.  A pretty good rule of thumb is the farther the land is from anything the cheaper it will be.
