Is there a class 3 or any other special Licenses needed for this thing?

I may be wrong about this, but an AOW Winchester 1300 would not have a buttstock or else it would be classified as an SBS. If you attach an AOW to an AR-15, wouldn't the host rifle now become the "buttstock" and require the AOW to be re-registered as an SBS? Can someone more knowledgeable confirm this?

On the link that Troy posted the Master Key is an SBS.

AOW transfer = $5
SBS transfer = $200

It requires a nfa tax stamp.

As far as I know it can be registered as as aow, but im not sure, my understanding is that its not permanent, Im gonna check in w/ the ATF

With the Masterkey system, your shotgun must be registered as a Short Barrel Shotgun, because as was said, the host rifle becomes the "stock"...

Ok, AR's I know, and I am versed in handguns, but Shotguns are new to me, can someone please explain exactly what the difference between Short Barrel Shotgun and AOW is, and what AOW stands for, and the registration and ownership restrictions on each?

What about shotguns with a barrel length of 18 inches or more?Does it still need a NFA tax stamp?

AOW = Any Other Weapon. They are an NFA item just like a MG, but the transfer tax is only $5 not $200.

From ATF's website:

(e) Any other weapon. -- The term "any other weapon" means any weapon or device capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive, a pistol or revolver having a barrel with a smooth bore designed or redesigned to fire a fixed shotgun shell, weapons with combination shotgun and rifle barrels 12 inches or more, less than 18 inches in length, from which only a single discharge can be made from either barrel without manual reloading, and shall include any such weapon which may be readily restored to fire. Such term shall not include a pistol or a revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores, or weapons designed, made, or intended to be fired from the shoulder and not capable of firing fixed ammunition.

A few More questions...

According to the link posted above that is a SBS, I understand the $5 vs. $20 tax, but what about registering requirements?  There is no Class 3 license or preban rifle needed for mounting, right?  Is there a way to do this as a AOW or to build this out of a $300 shotgun instead of the $1900 posted price on that website?

Also, are there any longer, higher capacity versions of this 'Master Key' that sould be mounted on a 20" AR?

Thanks

Do you really think it's a good idea to add 6 lbs. of weight to the front of your AR?

In order for the shotgun to NOT be an SBR (which is an NFA item requiring a $200 tax and NFA approvals, etc.), you'd need an 18.5"-barreled shotgun, which would stick out about 6-8" beyond the front of a 20" AR barrel.  It would make your AR almost useless.

i was thinkig bout cutting my shot gun to about 12 inch barrel or right to the end of the pump, and registering it as aow if possible if not an sbs,  my original question was if i could buy just the mounting hardware for my gun, without paying $1900, or however much they want for the complete kit, as i have a win 1300 that i dont use anymore and i picked it up for $75.00

For the shotgun to be able to be registered as an AOW it needs to have shipped from the factory with a pistol grip or without a stock.
I don't believe you can legally convert a shotgun that had a full stock to an AOW.

Then the second measurement comes into play...The overall length still has to be 26" or more, otherwise it is an NFA item.

I may be wrong, but an 18+" barrelled rifle that is under 26" might still fall under SBS category...at least an AOW.

Its legal...Just fill out the papers, send in some money, a photo, some prints, then sit back and relax while the Feds OK it.

So, is that link to the site the cheapest available, or is there a less costly way to get this set-up?
