I just found this forum and joined. I've read just about every thing regarding AR's on this site and it's nice to see others love the best rifle ever made. I shot my first AR type rifle as a baby Marine in 1967. I went thru boot camp with a M-14, qualifying expert. Infantry training, with an M-1, qualifying expert. Staging prior to Vietnam, M-16, qualifying expert. I was just a grunt in Vietnam. I was issued a M-16 but thought I needed something with longer range capability. Having been a NRA small bore and large bore competitive shooter, I "just knew I could do better with the M-14." I was 6'5", but after humping 20 magazines, and M-14 and all the rest of the gear, I am now only 5'9". I turned in the M-14 and gladly took back my M-16. My M-16 was used when it was issued to me. Many thousands of rounds I put thru it, it never jammed. It never changed zero. I would have given all the money I saved in my 13 month tour if I could have bought that rifle. I never saw a M-16 jam, I never saw an enemy solider shot in the torso run off, they just dropped dead. If we missed, they ran like striped a$$ apes. I love AK's but for a battle rifle, make mine an AK. Glad to join you guys. |

My last line was a total Freudian slip. It should say AR, AR, AR. Every now and then when I'm sitting in a comfortable chair, I'll dream about "how it could have been", but then I go pick up my M-1, or M-1A, but they were tougher them I. After the Marines and while in college, I saved up an bought a Colt SP-1. I became a police officer and used AR-15's and M-16's for almost 30 years of my career. Yeah, I love 'em. I even have a waffle magazine and my bipod, bipod case and cleaning rod gear that followed me from Vietnam. |
