I posted this over at the AK side and then started to wonder if those with AR's consider them that fragile? I replied to another post to which a response came back that 1200rnds is more than a slightly used gun. I hadn't said that was slightly used but then I started thinking if 1200rnds is not slightly used then how many? When I go to the range I don't shoot less than a few hundred rounds. As far as my AR's are concerned I shoot about 200 to 300rnds each time. Sometimes I don't even clean them after just 200rnds and they shoot flawlessly the next time around. So how many rounds do you guys put through your guns and at what point does a gun become seriously used? |

With quality ammunition, care, and cleaning I've NEVER had a riflle or pistol that was worn out from shooting. Case in point: M1-a we've been shooting since the early 80s on a regular weekly basis of anywhere from 100 to 200 rounds a week (average) and it still is accurate and functional My son's 30-30 was made in 1958 and is still tight, accurate, and functioning well even after almost a half a century of being shot, carried, and hauled on hunts. One of our ARs has been floating around the family for 15 years since it was aquired and it still hits exactly what it is aimed at every time. I recently got it back from one of the kids and he had not exactly kept it clean and he shot lots of Russian ammunition in it. I took more gunk out of it than I like to know and it still looks great and works well. (I think he had to replace some of the gas rings once and I had a new sear put in ten years ago after the original broke.) Even the original firing pin looks good under magnification despite LOTS of shooting (but I'm replacing it just in case...and continuing to shoot it.) |

"Slightly used" means it was carried home from the gun show/gun shop. Anything past that moves it into the "used" catagory, IMO. 1rd or 1k rds, it then imediately becomes a "previously shot rifle". I always laugh at the guys who try to say "only been shot 50rds" or some such BS when they're trying to sell something. Makes NO difference on market value how many rds came out of it. If it looks 98-99%, then that's what it will sell for. |
