What is required to make an AR barrel "free floating?"

Are AR's with free floating barrels substantially more accurate? Are they more susceptible to damage from hard use?

Thanks in advance for any responses

A free flaot handguard [;)]

There probably isnt a single thing you can do to improve the inherant accuracy of your gun than free float the barrel. So to answer your question... yes, they will be more accurate.

With some of the handguards available, probably, but there are some very tough and rugged choices out there as well that may in fact make it less prone to damage than standard handguards.

new-arguy,

Is this damage done by lots of heat buildup? Would shooting something like a 30rd COF for FDCC make a Bushy V-match too hot to handle?

Thanks for the response.

Can you steer me toward some appropriate manufacturers of those handguards? I am not interested in mounting a whole array of stuff on the rifle, just an Aimpoint or a scope.

Do you consider the handguards on the BM V-match rugged?

I have a V-match carbine. A 30 round FDCC course may not heat it up too much, but if you were to take an all day class, I think it might get a little toasty throughout the day. Hahaha, you know what? It was so darn cold at the last 3 day class I took, it might have actually helped!!

The standard free float tubes from any of the regular manufacturers are more delicate than standard handguards in my opinion. To get one of the very sturdy ones, you will have to pay a pretty premium price. Systems like the ARMS SIR and Knights RAS II are quite rugged. And to be honest, in addition to free floating the barrel and being a VERY tough system, the ARMS SIR will not heat up period. It offers better cooling than anyting else on the market.

It is however a high end accessory and I would only really suggest getting it if you think you need it or just have to have it. [;)]
