Yeah, another one. What are the differences between an AR A1 and an A2? Is the flat top better? I know an HBAR is the heavy barrel, right? Any other basic differences between models? Jim |
-The obvious difference is the rear sight. The A1 rear only adjusts for windage. The A2 rear can be adjusted for elevation. -If you want to mount any optics on your rifle, the flat top is better, since they can sit lower the the bore axis. If you're only into iron sights, then don't bother. -HBAR means "heavy barrel." However, it does NOT mean "match grade." |

If I may add a bit to the above. You can still put a scope on a carry handle, even a full size scope as I have done. The reason I got the carry handle style is I didn't want to have the day at the range ruined if the scope died, I could still use the iron sights. Hard to do if one has a flat-top. >gg< There's also a bunch of small AR-only scopes, 4x & such, is you don't want the full size. My .o2 |

If you are going to scope an ar-15, you will want to do that on a flat top. I agree with the statement about the iron sights, but you forget about the serious problem of CANT. Rifle cant is the arc that a scope swings when mounted too high above the shooting axis. On a carrying handle, the scope is a good 4" above the barrel axis. Take your gun and twist it 5 degrees to either side and watch what that does to your shot placement. The closer the scope is to the barrel, the less cant you will have to deal with. |

Some other differences pepperbelly, other than already listed are the thichness of the bbl, the rifling twist is 1/7 in mil. A2s and can be 1/9 in some kits (bushmaster for one), re-inforcments on the lower reciever to make it stronger and an A2 front sight has to have a four pronged A2 tool to adjust it as well. Remember, you can't hit crap with SS109 or equivelent M855 ammo out of an A1 1/12 twist barrel, it just won't stabilize the round enough to fly true. Hope this helped _______________________________________________hem |
