my carbine spits shells between 1-2 o'clock, is this because the spring is too strong or too weak? I know it can be tuned by cutting a coil at a time, and what is the roll pin size?

Your casings are being ejected forward due to the buffer not being stalled long enough at the rear or the buffer not coming all the way back.

First step is to check the carrier for full travel.  This is done by inserting a single round and checking the rifle stroke, the bolt should be locked back on the empty mag.

The second is to pull the buffer and shake it.  If yours is the BB packed, or the tungton steel discs(correct type)are stuck and not working correctly.

When the buffer comes back, it stalls at the rear, alowing time for the ejector to pivot the case off the bolt face.  If the buffer bounces off the rear, then the round is throw forward, during the forward stroke and not on the stall.

Leave the ejector/spring alone. The mod/clip is to adjust the distance of the ejection, not the angle.

Hope this helps.

On the left, click Tech Notes, and there read #34, which is about AR10's, but applies to AR-15's, too, in general.
