I know this is probably a real base question but I've had issues on other rifles.  I would like to mount a Red Dot on my carry handle for limited low light use.  Recommendations?  Will the heigth be an issue say with a BSA or similar? or should I spend the bucks on an AMT or similar? Already have a couple BSAs and since this is a real limited use thing I would like to get off less expensive.  Your answer could save me a trip to the range.

1) NEVER Mount a red-dot on TOP of the carry handle.  Its just too high for a decent trajecotry, and consistant cheekweld.

2) When mounting a red-dot to a carryhandle AR use a gooseneck type of mount.  Cavalry Arms makes one, and you can buy Aimpoint's and modify it for your scope (see the article on this at MD-AR15.com).  Of course you could always buy the  ARMS#39 (or the cheap Chineese copy if the rifle is just for plinking - a review of this mount is on MD-AR15.com).  This puts the scope inline with your irons for a better cheekweld and a superior trajectory.

If you want something decent & low cost try the OKO (Cavarly Arms sells them & their goosneck moutn was specifially designed for this sight).

It's been ages since I posted on this site, but here goes.  For situations such as you describd I am using a Tasco PDP3 in a B-Square mount with Weaver rings. I am using the extended or what ever they call it ring on front.  It is a little high, but it works well for me.  I also have a Leupold Vari X III Tactical 3.5X10 for longe range work.  It is also in a B-Square mount with Weaver rings.  The Tasco is not expensive and it works well for me.  Might be something to look into.

Thanks guys.  What I'm looking for is to do is some short range plinking in low light only on rare occasions.  The height of the carry handle had me wondering if I could even get the scope crosshairs even close to target.  I bought one of those AK dust cover 3X9s for the same reason and had that issue.  Of course, in my lowly opinion, putting a scope of any size on a 7.62X39 is a waste anyway.  I find my AR even with it's 16" barrel to be surprisingly on the money at up to 100 yards.

I know that this goes without saying, but the only good way to put any kind of optic on an AR is with a flattop.

I figured that out only recently.

It shouldn't be surprising at all!  My 16" DPMS groups under 1/2" @ 100 yards with the right ammo.  It'll take 200 yard shots with ease as well with minimal elevation adjustments.  These guns are unfrikkinbelievable!

Sure you can.  Two good scope for carryhandle mounting are the Compact ACOG (the best!) and an original Colt Scope.  As their mounts are integral to the scope they sit a bit lower than other scopes that require a separate mount.

For plinking even the Leapers 4x20 will do (be sure to LocTite the screws that hold the mount to the scope).  After proper zeroing set the scope to 4 for 25 yard plinking.

Though for close range (100yards and under) I think you're better served with a red-dot and gooseneck style mount.
