I was cleaning my AR for only the second time and I noticed a lot of scoring to the top of the buffer tube.  A lot of the gold finish is coming off.  Is this normal?  Is there a way to reduce the damage?

If you're talking about the buffer itsself, you should see a sort of "ring" of silver wear around its edge (where it contacts with the bolt carrier).  That's normal.

I'm glad to hear that.  I won't worry about it anymore.  Thanks for the info.

Do you have one of the newer style Colt carriers? I have one of those and have noticed considerably more scoring to the buffer than on any of the other rifles.
