I heard (reputable) rumors several months ago that someone (Wolf) would have a line of steel cased Grendel ammunition coming out at a plinking price point. Any new word on this at all?

As bwaites wrote, many are keeping their fingers crossed about the AA announcement next week––me included. I sure hope that the steel case is part of this announcement.
I've been in touch with Wolf a couple times this year via email regarding availability of the 110 grn FMJ steel case load. Back in the spring, their estimate was fourth quarter this year. When I contacted them again in Aug/Sept?, the estimate shifted to next year. Let's hope Wolf's estimating skills stink or that they simply weren't tipping their hat. |

Ticking along nicely. We are due the next 10,000 rounds for testing and lab work and then if we can get through the export jungle in a timely manner and get the test rifles into Russia, we are expecting to attend sign off in September.
The Russians are taking this work very seriously, more than one would expect for a simple contract build. We have already been involved in a lot of analysis work in respect to weapon durability. That is in addition to the regular testing for feed and function. |

BTT for an update

Yesterday, Bill posted this update in a thread on 65G steel case in the ARFcom Variants Forum:
"It takes more than a little time to orchestrate the production of ammunition on a commercial scale and it never seems to go quicker than anticipated. The initial testing series are complete including the extreme low temperature tests. Steel has a potential for a transition in behavior at depressed temperatures so it is imperative to verify the breach will effectively support the case and remain within the elastic limit of the cartridge case steel. Given the diameter of the AR barrel at the root diameter of the barrel threads where the extension mates this is at a maximum limit from calculation so testing was imperative. The 5.56 is at this limit value which is why 223 loads are the order of the day. Grendel retains a lower pressure so the system actually copes better. The factory is progressing with tooling a machinery park for the caliber. Their management made the decision that they would construct a dedicated production line rather than try and run the ammunition between batches of 7.62x39. The work takes more time and money up front but will allow for better supplies downstream. Work between the plant and the Molot rifle factory has yielded a good response within a number of interested entities in Europe and they are awaiting delivery of the nine AR test rifles which we shipped recently. Once the line is signed off we anticipate attending the ammunition sign off of first article at the Barnhaul military test ground. This was scheduled for September but may slip due to the time taken to obtain licenses from the State department. The steel case ammunition is predicted to run at the same cost as the 5.56. We are not the importers but are providing the back up for the technical aspects of the weapon and the interpretation of the specifications as well as language interpretation for the engineering side. Import will be through Wolf ammunition." John |

State Department while slow did run it's course and they were actually reasonable, in a takes 18 months to get it done, kind of way. Now we are sat waiting on the next samples, a sign off date and the start of deliveries. Got a whole bag of oks' ready and waiting. |

Apparently AA just got 10K rounds of test ammo. They need to run the tests and sign off on it.

They'll be an import ban or will be dead and gone before we see some on the market

Yes, the Russians have finalized the projectile design and also the powder.
Powder is to be a derivative of the type sold by Western Powders and is extremely stable, especially in the cold. It is a double base ball type and will be loaded to 3550 bar in line with the existing weapon and ammunition set up. The cases are now set to use a small primer and will use a boxer design rather than the berdan we originally tested. This simplifies compatibility with the less enthusiastic fire control group in the AR while at the same time allows the ammunition to work with the AK without problems related to primer failure. The projectile closely follows the design of the 7n6 5.45x39.5 in that it is a boat tail design with an internal cavity in the projectile nose. Constraints on the length of the projectile restrained the weight to 100 grains as we transitioned from a lead core to a steel core. This is lighter than we initially proposed but the combination of bullet weight and powder will provide a fast low recoil combination for the carbines. Ogive is 10 diameters and the boat tail is 9 degrees which is optimum, I anticipate the Bc to be around 0.390 but this is an estimate. A heavy type ball is also being examined for a longer range type weapon. |

Would a subsonic steel case be possible in the future or any sort of subs for Grendel owners with a can? Glad to hear this is coming along.

Just wanted to say thanks to Bill A and bwaits for their commitment to pushing and working with the manufacturers on this ammo. For plinking with the Grendel, this type of move in a lower dollar round will drive AA arms and the platform (Grendel) even higher.
To LRRP, thanks for being a good teacher. I know you are in on this some how. You guys are changing the industry for the better. |
