Hi guys,
New to the forum and fairly new to shooting (have a glock19 & s&w m&p 15-22) as well. I’ve got the Daniel Defense v11 slw and today was first time I took it to the range. I noticed that by end of the first magazine there was a pretty good bit of smoke coming from the barrel as well as the handguard was warm to the touch. By the end of the second magazine it was very warm with even more smoke coming from the barrel. I stopped after the 2 magazines. After I got home I broke it down and cleaned it and did not notice any issues. Is this expected from this particular rifle or is this common? Thanks. |
| That particular rifle has a lightweight barrel. They tend to heat up quicker. I went with a government profile barrel in my V11 because I have no need for any particular weight savings. With that being said, that gun can easily handle more than two mags before you start to notice accuracy fading. |

The smoke you're seeing is residual machine oil/packaging oil on the barrels surface burning off. This oil is also on the gas block and a bit in/around the flash hider. This is perfectly normal and will fade after a couple more mags worth of firing. As for dealing with the heat, shooting gloves and/or a rail grip or some sort, ( such as a vertical grip or angled foregrip ) will allow you to continue firing the rifle as it heats up. |

You definitely picked up a great model! From the factory, a light coat of oil is applied to the entire rifle before placed in a polybag and put in the rifle case. The smoke you experienced is just the oil burning off of the barrel. Nothing to be concerned about. You probably won't notice it any longer unless you apply more oil to the exterior of your barrel. Regarding the heat from the handguard, it's aluminum, therefore it's a conductor of heat. The more you shoot it, the hotter it will get. You just need to get some good rail covers to protect your hand and the rail. I typically use the Bravo Company Panels or ErgoGrip Wedgelok panels. Both work very well in my opinion.
