I've noticed that the "newer" low profile, pinned gas block you guys are offering has the taper pin hole on the top of the barrel like in the picture below. I may be completely mistaken about this being the current design, but in the event that it is, what was the motive for placing the hole on the top of the barrel? If the gas block was removed, and a standard FSB installed, would the existing "DD GB taper pin hole" in the top of the barrel be covered by the FSB?

I imagine that a GB that was pinned at the bottom of the barrel would either a) leave a visible channel (the hole drilled to pin the GB) on the barrel when the standard FSB is slipped over or b) the channel drilled to pin the GB would interfere/overlap with the channel needed to pin the FSB.

If either of these are the case for moving the taper pin hole to the top of the barrel, then bravo, DD. But again I'm just throwing out what I'm thinking and I could be completely off base. For all I know, the move of the taper pin hole was just to minimize the amount of material (and weight) of the GB by doing away with the blocky/flat portion on the bottom of conventional low profile gas blocks.
It would be a great design if one could originally pin your GB, then switch over to a standard FSB in the future without any visible, permanent markings from the ol' GB days. Kind of like the GB's designed to cover up the "scars" left by removed FSB's.

my guess is with it being on top, the GB could be lower profile, rather than being on the bottom.

If it was on the bottom, the GB would need more material down there for the pin. As it is on the top, there is already material there to accommodate for the the gas tube.

ETA: I should have read your entire post.

No worries! At least the ideas are flowing until someone from DD chimes in.

I thought gas blocks should be pinned on the bottom so the taper pin pulls the gas block down against the barrel to create a tighter seal around the gas port.  I guess DD hasn't found this to be an issue?

Huh, never thought of that, but I can definitely see where you are coming from. Gas blocks already allow "leakage" at these contact points, but I guess if the taper pin is installed correctly with tight tolerances, the gas block is no more worse off than one taper pinned at the bottom.

Thought I'd try this one again to see if there's an answer
