my guess is with it being on top, the GB could be lower profile, rather than being on the bottom.
If it was on the bottom, the GB would need more material down there for the pin. As it is on the top, there is already material there to accommodate for the the gas tube. ETA: I should have read your entire post. |

Gas blocks already allow "leakage" at these contact points, but I guess if the taper pin is installed correctly with tight tolerances, the gas block is no more worse off than one taper pinned at the bottom. |
