Just saw the new "Strength 2 Weight" barrels on the DD website. What's the story?

Strength to weight is DD's version of the heavy barrel.

Seems to be a little more complex than just a heavy barrel..  There is a fair amount of tapering after the gas block out to the FH/brake where most heavy barrels seem to have a the same diameter from the gas block out to the FH/Brake.

Also seems to be more tapered under the handguards too.  While I would be surprised it is a completely new never seen before profile, it is not the classic heavy barrel profile either.

Here is a pic of the DD 18" S2W and some line drawings of "standard" profiles below (courtesy of AR15barrels.com) that makes what I am trying to say a little clearer...maybe :-).

DD 18 S2W

Heavy Barrel Profile...

Medium Barrel Profile...

Government/M4 etc Profiles....

Very interesting.  This would indeed, be the optimum profile, where a "strength to weight" ratio is concerned.  I always wondered why no one made barrels like this.  The A2 "gov't" profile, having a bunch of extra weight and barrel diameter, at the END of the barrel (where heat buildup is lower, and bend damage is MUCH less likely), never made any sense to me.  I would be curious to see some weight figures of a 14.5" version of this, and maybe some full auto tests, like those done by the military.  I suspect they would perform as well or better, and would be lighter, than the current mil heavy profiles, that seem to be all the rage for full auto carbines.

If you look at the 14.5" M4A1 profile in the graphics I posted, that is the newer profile they switched to in an effort to help with the full auto barrel over heating issues...it has the extra material just as you described :-)

I have one of the DD 18" Middy S2W uppers on order with an M4A1 RIS II rail...can't wait to try it out when it gets here!

Hurry up DD...my new dedicated DD lower for this is collecting dust :-)

Everyone at DD that I have mentioned getting one of these (BTW, after the sale)...their first comment in an excited, almost childishly giddy voice was "tackdriver".....time will tell.

Regardless I am sure it will be more accurate than I am..and DD hasn't failed me yet (fingers crossed).. LOL

Yes, but not a constant taper, like the S2W profile.  I was referring to the M4A1 heavy profile, when talking about a test, compared to the S2W.  Talking about the govt profiles, was a seperate thought I was trying to express.

Barrels have been tapered for 500 years now. With the thick end at the chamber and the skinny end at the muzzle.

Only the US Government can screw up something as basic as that.

Kudos, DD, for breaking away from the Government/M4 profile stupidity.

Looks like a Ultimax 100 barrel.

So that means it could be accurate AND handle Full Auto fire very well... COOL :-)

Its a great contour; we use this contour in front of gas block as well.
