I have a RRA lower[I installed the LPK] with a 16" mid length RRA A4 upper. When the upper is installed and closed, the mags insert hard and won't drop free. They have to be pulled out by hand. They work fine in the lower without the upper attached. The mags are the $9.95 ones from CMMG. It looks like they are binding on the lower edge of the feed ramp. Any thoughts?  TIA    Jack

How do I tell if it's the lower that's out of spec and not the upper? Or vice versa?
FWIW-The mags I have are all "Labelle"

I might take it to the range today to try some other brand mags and also look at some other AR's to see if they have that slight overhang of the upper.

Have you taken a look up into the magwell like I suggested?

With out having another upper to mate to your lower, all I can suggest is take a look to see if the breech area of the upper receiver is extended over the magwell. I would look first in this area since you say the front of your mags are wearing from removal/insertion.

If true, that there was a batch of out-of-spec receivers, then contact RRA either over the phone, or here on the site in their respective Industry Partner Forum.

As another member above stated, do not file on the receiver because then you may void any warranty.

Just a WAG, but how tight is your mag catch adjusted?

Just thinking,if I had the mag catch too tight wouldn't it show even with the upper removed?  Cus with the upper off, mags insert and drop fine. I dunno.

That's why it was a WAG! So, how tight do you have the catch?

ETA: A good starting point when installing the mag catch, is to thread the catch into the release button until the threaded portion of the catch is just under flush with the buttons surface.

Exact same issue I had with a S&W MP15T.

When I changed out various uppers and other lowers, the problem ceased. My diagnosis was the upper and lower receiver were out of alignment and this was causing the magazine to not release and drop free.

I have read of other MP15T owners experiencing the same phenomonon: some sent their rifles back to S&W for service, while others did as I - mixed and matched to achieve function.

Perchance do you have another upper and lower available to switch out to see if fit/alignment  might be an issue?

I backed the mag catch off a little. It's just under flush. Still doing it.

It's the only upper and lower I have so can't try other combinations.

Mmmm.....

Could be as the poster above describes, an out of spec upper receiver. Don’t know what to suggest then. Call RRA?

I too fiddled with the mag catch release, alas to no avail.

Something is binding and causing the mag to not release and drop when the catch is activated with the upper attached.

Another possibility to examine is the mag catch may be out-of-spec.

I been using one mag in particular and it is getting a little easier to insert and pull out with noticeable wear marks on the front lip of the mag. Damn,I don't want to call RRA as I just got this upper today from Legal-Transfers.Maybe judicious use of a file?

Take a look up inside the magwell towards the pivot pin. Does the upper receiver hang over the magwell edge?

Your best bet........put the files down and call Pete.

i've got a new RRA complete lower in that is having the same problem...might be time to call 'em....

Can you see any "shiny" areas on the mag catch indicating metal to metal contact that might be causing the magazine to bind?

As to "judicious use of a file" - be very careful! If you have an out-of-spec upper, you're dealing with a warranty return situation, but if you start filing on the upper you will void the warranty.

Please proceed cautiously. If the problem is an out-of-spec mag catch, it's an inexpensive part to replace.

One further observation from my experiences with the 15T and magazines not dropping free: some manufacturer's magazines would drop free without issues, while others acted as you are experiencing.

Overall, CProducts generally would drop; some OKAY's worked, others not; D&H were a no go, as well as PMAGS. Labelle's, no. Adventureline, no. Center Industries, some yes others no.

Perhaps try some various magazines and see if there's any difference.

I know you said that you didn't want to contact RRA but if you go to the industry forum and just contact the RRA moderator (Steve), he is extremely helpful. Some of the best customer service I have received.

I have had 3 RRA lowers on backorder for some time and about 2 weeks ago my FFL got them in only to have to ship them back due to a problem with out of spec lowers.  It is possible if it is a newer lower it could have produced with the same batch.  RRA is a solid company with great customer service, and when mistakes happen they take care of it.  Give them a ring I'm sure they'll help you.  Good luck

Jack and I have exchanged e-mails on it.
If there is a problem with his lower, we'll take care of it.  We handle warranty issues on a case by case basis.
