So I just put together my first AR (PSA 16" mid length). It has the standard F marked front sight and a rear BUIS. I'll be using it for range fun (50 - 100 yards), and home defense. I should also note that I have old guy eyes (I can see OK, but need bifocals to read). What is the right kind of optic for me? I initially was going to pick up a PA micro dot. But now, I think the compact 2.5 will work better. My budget is $250 or less.

I would appreciate any thoughts you might have.

that's really your call. What ever works best for you is what you should use. For a HD gun, most people will pick the red dot.

0-250 yards is EASY with a red dot unless you're shooting for groups.

After years and years of shooting I have come to the conclusion that a rifle should be flexible, able to CQB and be able to hit targets 300+ with that said the 2,5X is perfect for that and is not battery dependent. You can see the reticle even if the battery fails, on the red dot unless you got cowitnessing BUIS your SOL!

Dimitri,

In your experience, would the 4x have a huge disadvantage for CQB purposes compared to the 2.5? Or would it still be usable enough in a pinch?

I can CQB with the 4X really fast. Here is how I do it. I illuminate keep the reticle illuminated and centered but not pointing at target area keeping it just below but in my peripheral . I keep both eyes open and scanning when I do see a threat or target I bring it up and line them up but with out looking through the scope. You can practice it with your front cap closed.

I think the 2.5x is an EXCELLENT general use optic. Gives a nice little assist for longer shots, but doesn't hinder when you're close in. Plus, unlike variable scopes, nothing to fiddle with when you pick it up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I'm sold on the 2.5x. Just need to save some cash. For my needs, is the 4x overkill?

It sounds like the 2.5X is the best fit for you.
