I have a CHF midlength that I got on Cyber Monday. It came with PSA's Premium BCG I believe. I've still never gotten around to using it yet (still waiting on a deal for a LBK). I took apart the BCG earlier to clean off any factory grime and lube it up, and it seems like there are a couple points on it that are concerning. I've never owned an AR before, so these might be silly concerns. The first is on the base of the gas key, the edge towards the bolt seems...chewed up on the corner. The metal is raised and it seems like I should take a file to it.

The other concern is the cam pin. It seems to be slightly gouged. It looks like it is from riding in the bolt carrier groove. I can feel it with my fingernail so it is a little deep.

Is this anything I should be worried about? The spot on the gas key doesn't seem like a big deal since it doesn't really appear that it comes in contact with anything, but I'm not sure about the cam pin. When I received this, the BCG was dry as a bone, and it did appear to have been test fired since there was a brass mark on the bottom.

Hmm, the cam pin doesn't seem like it would be a big deal to me. I was pretty sure that mine look similar, but I'll let others chime in.

On the gas key, personally if it were me, I would ask for a BCG swap. I've never had a new BCG that looks like that and since you paid for a new product, that's what I would expect it to be.

Looks like a lightly used BCG to me. Maybe from test firing the upper prior to shipping?

Interesting. I have similar wear on the BCG from my black friday deal. I had chalked it up to test firing... which may be the case. But there is a fairly visible carbon ring on the bolt face already. Is there a chance these shipped with used BCGs? Or there was a lot of test firing.

Would there be any issue with headspacing since I assume it was checked with this particular bolt?

I don't really know if it's worth the trouble, as long as that is he corner isn't going to have any I'll effects on the rest of the rifle. The cam pin may be though.

Yes, mine was also pretty dirty there as well. It also had a black ring on the back face part of the firing pin as well. The whole cleaning of it required quite a few patches.

You shouldn't experience any headspacing issues as our upper receivers are tested with bolts of that exact profile.

Strange. I've never had a bolt come with a carbon ring on it, other than surplus. So I was a little surprised. But I suppose if the upper was having a lot of issues during assembly it might take more rounds to finish test firing. How many shots would it take to build up a significant carbon ring on the bolt face? When I get home I'll take some pictures and dismantle my bolt.

I think the first photos I posted were bad, here are others I took with daylight. I think the oil on the gas key was making it look worse than it was. I don't know if it's worth the trouble of sending the whole BCG back.

I would shoot that BCG all day long and not worry about it.  It looks fine to me.

OP, those marks are probably from jostling around with all the other hundreds/thousands of like parts before being assembled together. It's not a paint, so it won't flake off. I've had worse looking components, that while it didn't look good to me, it never affected the function.

Me. I would just lube it up real good and shoot.
