I am wanting to buy a barrel Monday.  I am looking at the 16'' CHF A2 style, and the M4A1 16''CHF as well.  The SOCOM barrels are more of an Hbar type, but with the M203 cutout of course, are they not?  Is the M4A1 definitely a heavier barrel?

One other question:  I am ordering a BCG, and complete upper receiver as well.  Is there any wait on these, or are they ready to ship?  Thanks, 9080

I have the M4A1 profile. It does not have the cutouts for the M203. It is heavier than an A2 profile too but it is at the back of the barrel so the balance is not too bad.

The M4A1 adds 4 ounces over the M4 barrel.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the responses.

@wrc777, is your the Palmetto?  I don't doubt what you are saying in the least, and would rather not have the cutouts.  But, at least in the pics on the PSA site, they show cutouts.  Maybe a wrong pic for the product, which is totally understandable.  How does yours shoot?  I don't mind the weight at all, as I am not a small guy.  Thanks again, 9080

Which cutouts are you refering to?  Please post a link to the picture.

The flats under the handguard to clear an M203 mount.

Sorry for the confusion guys.  PSA, I was talking about the M4A1 barrel, on the "barrels" page of you guys site.  It appears to have the M203 cutouts, on it, like a typical M4 barrel would have.  Thanks guys, ya'll do a great job.  9080

I don't see the cut outs in that picture. That is exactly what my barrel looks like only I got it as a rifle build kit from Palmetto. If you look for pics of barrels with the SOCOM profile you can see what the M203 flats look like.

It shoots well, and the balance is better than the FN 20" upper I have. The rifle feels really solid in the middle if that makes any sense. It swings quick for the weight. I would like to see this profile with the 14.5 or 14.7 barrel. That one would balance even better.

Okay, maybe I am going crazy, which is totally feasible.  Does nobody else see the "cutout" on the barrel that I posted a link to?  About 4'' from the front of the barrel?  I am aware that SOCOM barrels have some "flats" machined on them, but that is not what I am in reference to.

Maybe I am not saying this correct, and I apologize if I am being as clear as mud.  I am talking obout the "necked down" section just like the standard M4 barrels have.  Do the SOCOM barrels have these?  It surely looks like it to me in the pic that I linked.  I am talking about the section to the right of the gas port.

Thanks for the patience, and the help guys.  9080

Are you talking about the section of barrel turned down that makes the M4 barrel distinctive?

Yes Sir, that is exactly what I am talking about.  Can anybody please tell me what that is called?  I was under the inpression, that it was called the "M203" cutouts.  Maybe I am wrong about this.  Thanks for the help.

So does the SOCOM barell have that?  And what purpose does it serve, if yes, other than making a weird profile.  9080

The M203 slots are under the handguard I think? Maybe they are not necessary on a gov't profile barrel because it is thinner there.
