Back in 1989 I bought a used Colt 20 barrel at a gun shop! I tooh the rifle that same day to the shooting range and the gun Jamed every time!
Anyway I took the gun back to get my money back! They said the reason it jamed is because I had the Selector on AUTO? I still ask for my money and got it! Question on this Colt AR15 it had auto safe, semi! Was this a LEO model?

The previous owner had apparently put some M16 internals in it (the selector, at least).  I'd guess it was used by someone with a drop-in auto sear, and they just took their DIAS out when they sold it to the gunshop.

I don't what the exact deal is, but I have seen an online ad with pics of a factory Colt semi-auto AR-15 with the SAFE SEMI and AUTO markings. Maybe some just slipped out. With Colt, almost anything is possible.

Early SP1's had the same guts as the M16, bolt carrier, trigger mech, selector, disconnector, but no auto sear. So, the selector lever would rotate to the auto position, you would just get a single shot, then often, a malfunction. Later, Colt changed the internals, sear block, etc. and the little raised "bump" that prevents the selector from moving to the third position.

The lower on my LE6920 (Marked Law Enforcement Carbine) which came from the factory as a complete carbine is marked "Safe" and "Semi".  So, just as Boomer says, anything can be possible.
