I recently picked up an SP-1 serial# 78xxx, I think this puts it in the 1977-1978 production period. I have checked and everything is correctly marked as colt produced.
The question I have is that the upper and lower are two different colors, upper is darker than the lower is this normal or has someone bastardized the lower? I was wondering if this may have left the factory this way.

 thanks in advance

More than likely it is all original. A difference in color is not too uncommon.

What are the letters on the upper. They should be on the left rear of the carry handle in the indention below the rear site.

Here, check out this link on uppers.

JonnieGTyler, thanks for the reply. I have checked and the letters are CM, everything else checks out with Bigghammers sight. Boltcarrier, bolt, front sight and barrel all have appropriate lettering on them.
I was wondering if I got a good deal or not. I got a 7.62 Israeli K-98 and the SP-1 for my AR-10 A-2. I hope I did ok.   thanks again

I'm not really up on the prices of the AR10, but I think you came up a little short.

Around here one can usually find nice SP1's for $1000-1100. I am thinking the Israeli K-98's are $150-200. That's about $1300. Maybe you didn't do too bad after all. Two for the price of one isn't so bad.

Anyway, enjoy your new rifles. I like the SP1's and that old Mauser (like all those old surplus arms) reeks of history.
