I recently picked up a Colt MT6601 from Bud's. It was my first AR lust back in the late 90s and for some reason, throughout the years and even though the ban has long passed, I've always found myself attracted to this style of rifle. Of course it has the A2 upper, no bayo lug, and no flash hider - or threads for that matter. I understand there isn't really much collector value for this rifle so I more or less bought it based on how much I enjoyed them when I was younger.
All that aside, does anyone know why Colt is still sending these out? My barrel is marked November of 2009. Both the upper and lower are Cerro Forge. Maybe they have a large inventory of leftovers of this style? If they just have the spare upper receivers, why not turn out some 6520s? (Also one of my first AR crushes) Thank you all for your help. |

The last time I've seen a Match Target model MT6601 wan on the 2010 Colt official catalog, then the next year 2011 catalog it was no longer shown, they only have the flattop upper receiver MT6700 Competition HBAR with the detachable carry handle.
I have an older MT6601 but just the lower half I bought like new in early 2005, it have the non standard large hammer and trigger pins and that time just after the assault weapon ban sunset there were plenty of USGI M16A2 Colt upper half at good prices so I bought one and installed it on my 6601 lower half. Before this I had the original 6600 pre ban A2 Sporter HBAR I bought new in 1986 with A2 flash hider and bayonet lug, also the fixed A2 carry handle, I used it mainly for DCM/ CMP rifle competition until about the mid 1990s. There are always some new old stock models at dealers and someone that kept it new in box, then decided to sell it later on. Enjoy it! |
