Please help me understand the difference in "pin" sizes.  I've read that some sizes are .170 then I read about .154 being standard and better.  I'm lost on pin sizes.  And how can I tell the size of theses pins?  Can you see the difference with the naked eye?

Not possible with naked eye. All Colts made after 2009 have the standard .154 pins.

So should buyers be concerned about pin sizes?  Has Colt always used .170 pin size until recently?  What's the value in having a rifle with .154 pin sizes vs. one with .170 pin sizes?

If you're going to buy a new or newer Colt AR model made after mid 2009, they mostly have the small military standard size 0.154" fire control pins.

From the first AR model SP1 in 1964 up to about late 1980s to early 90s Colt AR models have the small 0.154" pins, from late 80s and early 90s they changed it to large size 0.170" up to the mid 2009.

So it depends when the Colt AR was made, the value of the firearm doesn't go up or down because of the size of the fire control pins, the smaller pins are just more desirable to most buyers.
