I had some discussion points posted in the AR-15 forum and was referred here..

I bought a new old stock (in box etc) Colt 6721.  My main concern is the receiver extension.  I found it wasn't staked.  I was also informed because it is a 6 position, it's not original either.  Question being does Colt use 6 position receiver extensions?

It is mil-spec dia.

Pics on this thread....

I checked out your thread and I think the other members there have correctly identified that somebody had changed out some of the furniture on your rifle.

My 6721 from ~ 2005 has round not M4 oval handguards.  At that time of manufacture, to my knowledge, only the 6920 models had the oval M4 handguards (well, also the 6933 adn some of the SBRs.

However, Colt being Colt, they do put out some in between and transition oddballs to use up spare parts at times, thereby confounding those of us who are keen on configuration and model specifics.....

But that 6 position receiver extention, I don't think that's Colt and not being staked just about confirms tthat somebody has messed with that gun.

Interesting observation that somebody pieced together an M4 handguard with only one set of heat shields.

I'd bring these observations to the attention of whoever sold you the rifle.

No factory original Colts will have a 6 position buffer tube and all of them will be staked.

I bought it off a dealer from Gunbroker...  Even if I bought it in person, I wouldn't have known that Colt only used 4 position buffer tubes until I posted here anyhow..  I most likely wouldn't have noticed the lack of staking either..  The handguards are not that big a deal to me.  Even though I paid for all "Colt", my only real concern is the buffer tube.  I did back order a new one from Brownells along with the end plate and the castle nut.  Hopefully the stuff from Brownells is Colt factory as advertised...  Easier to replace it myself than send it back..

The Colt receiver extension from Brownells is authentic Colt.
It's like $100......but it's all Colt.

If Brownells states something is Colt, then it is Colt.

Once the dust settles and you get your 6721 all figured out, you'll truly appreciate it for what it is; one of the most accurate off the shelf rifles.  I purchased one off the EE here several years back and is rock solid and accurate all get out.  I may get blasted here, but I find it just as accurate as my 6940.

Okay, let the flaming begin...
