I did a search and hope I didn't miss a post with the answer already explained.

Is there a way to identify that a BCG is a Colt BCG or not?

The carrier should have a large "C" stamped on it, and the bolt should also have "MP C" stamped on it.

That's about all I can remember off the top of my head.

Edit:  The bolt might only have MP...  I didn't drag my rifle out to double-check.

Some older Colt carriers (made in the '60s) were not "C" marked. Colt began marking them with the "C" after H&R and GM started manufacturing M16A1's. There are features that can be used to identify them, though. They are: large retaining pin hole, and square stake marks.

The unmarked Colt carrier is the bottom one in each photo (the top one is a later "C" marked M16A1 carrier). Notice the large retaining pin hole and the square stake marks.

Unmarked Colt's also had round dimpled stakes. Your photo example, isn't a genuine Colt square staked carrier. It's also been "re-staked" on the sides somewhere along the line. FN also square stakes carriers. -W

I should have noted in my previous post that the earliest carriers had round stake marks, and the later carriers had square stake marks. The even later (current) carriers, as we all know, have triangle stake marks on the sides. Yes, that carrier has been re-staked, but it is original Colt. As I said earlier, note the large firing pin retaining pin hole in the first photo, then go through the M16 Variation Guide in the Retro Forum.

ETA: Original Colt square staked carriers from the aforementioned Variation Guide. Notice that they are identical to the bottom carrier in my photos, save for the fact that mine was re-staked at some point:

How does the Colt D marked carriers made by Colt Canada differ from the D marked carriers made by DPMS?

I just found a black parked, not grey, bolt carrier without a C stamp in a LE 6940 upper.  Has anybody else seen these?

Here's additional info about Colt bolt markings from member Molon and other members.

MPIC

C - ground down MPC with large letter "C" over the previous erased marking

MP A C - letter "A" means month code Sep '95 (no C letter to avoid confusion), then under dash line - then over dash line - then all month code dropped

MPD - Colt Canada - Diemaco

CM marked bolt are not Colt they are made by CMT.

If a BCG came out of an M16A1 received from Uncle Sam through the DRMO, what possible manufacture could it be?  Anything other than Colt or FN?  I thought there was an ANAD marking on this rifle somewhere or possibly on the packaging in which it was received that indicated a date of 1984 but I'm unable to locate those markings to be sure.

The staking is triangular similar to 86HMMWV's bottom carrier without the added square staking however it does not have the large firing pin retaining pin hole.  There are no other markings on the carrier anywhere.

Was there a time when Colt BCGs weren't considered all that great compared to current ones?
