I had bought a Colt Sporter in the early to mid 80's ,I think it was rifle length 20" barrel .Then came the proposed assault weapons ban that the assholes we trying to pass and like a little pussy I sold it .I was younger and a lot dumber ,so anyway I bought a 6920 about a year and a half ago but I just cant get the hankering out of my head for my old rifle .The one I bought in the 80's I believe I payed 500.00 for it.

Anyway what does Colt sell that is close to the same rifle that I had ?Looks like most have no flash hider or a compensator.
And I would really like to buy new then used so what are my options?
I also remember after I bought the old gun that I wished I had got the heavy barrel. I keep looking at the Colt site and really cant make up my mind ,help !

My second Colt AR-15 that I bought was in 1984 it was a model R6500 AR-15A2 SP2 20" standard M-16A2 government profile barrel, 1/7 twist, with fixed A2 front sight, A2 birdcage flash suppressor, round ribbed A2 handguards, since it was the first year it was released it had an A1 fixed carry handle rear sight (no rear sight elevation adjustment).

The lower receiver had a large pivot pin, A1 type, without fence around the mag release button, and A2 fixed buttstock.

Between 1980 and '85 they were still selling the first AR-15 Sporter SP1 that's with the A1 type standard barrel and triangular handguards.

I had to sell my first AR SP1 which I bought in '71 to buy the new '84 A2 SP2, I wished I didn't sold my first rifle but I was short of money because I also bought a Springfield M1A (semi-auto M-14), and a series 80 Colt Gov't. 1911 .45 pistol.

The closest to those SP1 and SP2 rifles are probably the current model MT6601 Match Target HBAR (they also have a model MT6601C with pinned muzzle brake/ compensator), it have a fixed carry handle upper and the rear sight have elevation adjustment, the barrel profile is heavy, hence they call it a HBAR model.

Another model they have are the MT6700 and MT6700C (the letter C means compensator/ muzzle brake) Match Target Competition HBAR these have flat top upper receiver with detachable carry handle sight.

The model with the flat top are better if you will be attaching either a red dot sight or scope, if you're not going to use optics the fixed carry handle model are fine.

New in box old models R6000 SP1 and R6500 SP2 rifles are still around if you're patient and keep on looking in the internet they sometimes show up once in a while.

if you want a preban version of your gun with HBAR try to find the R6601

but I would wait until we see whats new from colt this year. they are bringing out a lot of stuff it seems like adn you never know.

the MT6601 will be like the one you had but have no flash hider.    but the R6601  Sporter   will  be closest to a M16A2 clone.   its pretty easy to find one for under 1000 if you are patient

I might have to wait to see what comes next from Colt.I'm just in the thinking about stage right now so I don't really know what I'm looking to get but the Sporter style is pulling on my WHAT DO I WANT NEXT STRINGS.

But there's also the 308 coming .........DAMN ,so many wants but so little money !
Finally got my 6920 where I want it ,so just thinking about the next one.And there will be a next one and it will be Colt.

Better yet, do what I did with my 6601. Bought a Colt A2 government profile barrel assembly and swapped out barrels.
