A SBR bill just passed in my state. I just bought a Colt 6920 a few days before the bill passed thinking that it wouldnt pass this year. I want would like to have a Colt 6933 but I will have to folk up some more cash. Here is my options.

1- Sell the Colt 6920 and folk up money for the Colt 6933.
2- Form 1 6920 and have the barrel cut down to 10.5 or 11.5

If #1 I can Form 4 and not worry about cutting down the length of the barrel or engraving the lower.
If I do #2 I have to disassemble the lower and I dont know how to do it?

Also what would be the best barrel length between 10.5 and 11.5?

I don't think you can cut down an M4 profile barrel to 11.5 and still be able to have threads. So, if you want 11.5" you will probably have to buy a new barrel. You can still cut it to 10.3" or 12.5". I would go 10.3" myself and call it a Mk18 clone.

are there any reliability issues with 10.3 barrels? and will a surefire FA556-212 mount to it?

I would keep the 6920,  register the lower, then buy a 6933 upper flaoting around on Arfcom. like the one yarddogone has
actually he will trade his 6933 upper for a 6920 upper right now if he still has it.    but I would keep it and just get an upper

I would do this or sell the 6920 and buy a factory 6933. I don't like engravings, so I actually just did the latter for myself a couple months ago. Waiting on the form 4 now.

What ever you do though, please don't cut a colt barrel.

If you have to for money reasons yes go with this, but wouldnt you rather have both.  I would. This just sounds like a great opportunity to have a 6920 and a 6933

As long as you have it done by someone with experience, it should be fine. I don't recall what the gas port size should be on a 10.3", but that info is available on the web. You can start with an H2 buffer and then if you have problems move down to an H buffer.

I have no experience with the FA556-212, but according to that picture it should work. The thing to worry about with mounting a suppressor on a 10.3" barrel is if the can reflexes over the barrel and if the flash suppressor mounts back over the barrel. Since you can see the timing washers on that mount I don't think it would be a problem. A 12.5" will let you mount a reflex style can on a carbine with a 9.5" or less handguard.

Getting a seperate upper is another option, but that will cost you a lot more than having yours cut down. Also, you could get a 10.3" DD barrel or 11.5" BCM barrel. It all depends on what you will want later and what you will be able to afford.

Bayonet lugs on 10.3's can also interfere with some CANs.

bayonet lugs on guns that cannot physically accommodate a bayonet are silly. That's why the LE6933 and M4 Commando uppers do not have them.

a few months back i purchased a LEO trade in from Spiwaks Machine Guns for $1225 delivered. They offer several grades and i opted for the top A+ condition and im thrilled. The 6933 looks to be easily 98% and looks to have spent majority of its life in a  rack soemwhere...doesnt look carried or shot.  You wont find a 6933 any cheaper than that in that condition.  I love my 6920's but that Commando is bad ass...go for it.
