What is the best way to add a VFG to a 6920? Can I use the stock handguards?

I'd personally get a Knight's RAS to mount a VFG on a 6920 which will be the more expensive route ($150.00). However, I believe someboday such as UTG manufactures a slightly tapered rail segment that allows the mounting of a VFG (at right-angle) on standard M4 hg's which would be the super cheap solution ($15.00). A low to moderate cost solution would be to get a set of Magpul Moe hg's and a rail segment from ergo ($40.00).  I have probably missed a zillion other options however this is what quickly came to mind.  Good luck.

Cheers

You can buy just a section of rail, and mount it using the vent holes on the bottom of the handguard. It's the cheapest solution. But, it might still be a little wobbly. Ergo rails
Next up is the MOE HGs with the rail mounted to the bottom.
There are, or were, handguards with a built in rail on the bottom. I don't recall the manufacturer off hand.
Then insert your non-free float railed handguard of choice.

Any of those is easy to do and doesn't require modification of the rifle.

Fairly cheap option:

Get a Troy MRF-DI rail system.  They can be had for just over $100 and are rock solid.  I think I've tried every method of mounting a VFG via the plastic hand guards, but they were all pretty weak.  If you really want to go that route, the GG&G Under Foregrip Mount was the best I found.  You have a top tier rifle and I would go with a solid option if the bank account can accommodate.  My $.02.

Thanks guys I admit I've stayed out of adding the rails and stuff but I think that bug has finally bitten

Here are a few options you could consider which would allow you to mount a rail system and not have to modify your weapon (take anything apart).

1. Knight's Armament RAS
2. Knight's Armament RAS II
3. VLTOR CASV-M
4. ARMS Sir

Yes, you can get a rail mount that attaches to your hand guards, but that's are real humpty dumpty IMHO.

Here is what the VLTOR would look like on your 6920. Definitely a slick looking setup

I'd rather have handguards and a rail segment over 3 of the 4 options that was indicated. YMMV.  Also, image of CASV appears to be on a middy.

I'm a fan of the D Omega 7.0 rail.  Free float, solid, and no gunsmithing.

The Magpul MOE handguard (with a section of rail) is another option.  Cheap too. You can add a light later.
